Myanmar Jadeite Rough Market Surges Again: High-End Material Prices Skyrocket, Industry Faces Structural Adjustments
【Yangon, March 28, 2024】 The global jadeite rough market experienced another significant surge in March 2024. According to firsthand information obtained by our reporter from major jadeite mining areas and trading markets in Myanmar, the price of jadeite rough continued its upward trend this month. The increase was particularly astonishing for high-quality ice-jade and glass-jade materials, with some top-tier rough even breaking historical highs. Meanwhile, prices for mid-to-low-end jadeite rough, while experiencing minor fluctuations, remained relatively stable overall, indicating an increasingly differentiated market.
This price surge is not an isolated incident but a direct reflection of the persistent tight supply of Myanmar jadeite rough. In recent years, due to various factors, mining activities in Myanmar's jadeite regions have been strictly restricted, leading to a sharp decline in the output of high-quality rough. Industry insiders reveal that Myanmar's jadeite rough exports in 2023 decreased by approximately 15% compared to the previous year, and export data for the first quarter of this year is expected to continue to contract. This supply-demand imbalance is the core driver behind the soaring prices of high-end materials.
"The scarcity of high-quality jadeite rough currently on the market, especially those reaching ice-jade and glass-jade grades, has reached an unprecedented level," stated Professor Li Ming, a senior expert from the China Jewelry & Jade Industry Association and a renowned jade connoisseur, in an interview with our newspaper. "These top-tier materials are not only sought after by jewelers but also key targets for collectors and investors. Their value is no longer solely a commodity attribute but also possesses the dual attributes of artwork and rare resources." Professor Li further predicted that prices for high-end jadeite rough would maintain a strong upward trend in the coming year, with annual increases potentially reaching 20% to 30%.
Market data shows that the average transaction price for ice-jade and glass-jade rough this month increased by approximately 10%-15% compared to last month, with some exceptional pieces exhibiting unique translucency and color seeing increases of over 20%. For instance, a 1-kilogram ice-jade 'Imperial Green' rough recently sold at a small auction for a price far exceeding expectations, setting a new record for the unit price of similar materials. In contrast, price fluctuations for mid-to-low-end jadeite rough, such as common glutinous-jade and bean-jade, were relatively moderate, with general increases between 2%-5%. Some lower-grade materials even experienced slow sales.
This market differentiation has had a profound impact on the entire jadeite industry chain. For downstream processing enterprises and retailers, the sharp rise in high-end raw material costs undoubtedly increases operational pressure. Some brand merchants relying on high-quality materials have had to adjust their product strategies, either raising prices or shifting to developing mid-to-high-end product lines to balance costs. In the mid-to-low-end market, where raw material prices are relatively stable, competition is more intense, and profit margins are squeezed.
"We are already feeling immense cost pressure," said an anonymous manager of a jadeite processing enterprise in Jieyang, Guangdong. "In the past, we could maintain operations by processing ordinary materials. Now, high-end materials are unavailable, and mid-to-low-end materials offer thin profits. The entire industry is seeking transformation and upgrading."
Looking ahead, the structural adjustment of the Myanmar jadeite rough market will continue to deepen. As high-quality veins are increasingly depleted and mining policies become stricter, the scarcity of high-end jadeite rough will become even more pronounced, and its investment and collection value will continue to rise. The mid-to-low-end market may face more intense competition and product homogenization issues. Industry experts advise relevant enterprises to actively embrace innovation, enhance design and processing techniques, and build brand characteristics to address the challenges brought by market changes. At the same time, investors entering the high-end jadeite market must carefully assess risks and seek assistance from professional appraisal institutions to ensure the security of their investments.
