Myanmar Jadeite Raw Material Supply Continues to Tighten, High-End Market Prices Reach New Peaks
[Yangon/Kunming, March 28, 2024] In March 2024, the global jadeite market once again focused on Myanmar. According to the latest data obtained by our reporter from multiple raw material trading markets, due to various factors such as the complex situation in Myanmar and adjustments in mining policies, the supply of jadeite rough stones remains tight, leading to a structural increase in overall prices. Among them, prices of high-quality ice jade and glass jade, which are rare materials, have seen particularly significant increases, while prices of mid-to-low-end varieties have remained relatively stable, indicating an increasingly clear market differentiation trend.
Industry analysts point out that this price increase is not a fleeting phenomenon but a concentrated manifestation of deep-seated supply and demand contradictions. According to incomplete statistics, in the first quarter of this year, the total volume of Myanmar jadeite rough stones entering the Chinese market decreased by approximately 15% to 20% year-on-year, while the demand for high-end jadeite finished products grew by about 10% during the same period. This supply-demand imbalance directly pushed up the prices of high-quality raw materials.
"Over the past month, we have observed that the transaction prices of top-grade ice jade and glass jade rough stones have generally increased by 15% to 25%, with some rare colored materials even seeing premiums of over 30%," said Professor Li Ming, a senior expert at the China Jewelry and Jade Association and a renowned jade appraiser, in an interview with our publication. "This increase is mainly concentrated on exquisite materials that have collection value and investment potential. For ordinary consumers, the price fluctuations of mid-to-low-end jadeite are relatively small, but there is still some upward pressure in the future."
Market data shows that a collection-grade ice jade imperial green jadeite rough stone now easily surpasses one million RMB per kilogram, an increase of about 20% compared to the same period last year. Some colorless jadeites with unique floating flowers or reaching high-ice levels have also shown a steady upward trend in prices, demonstrating the market's pursuit of scarce resources. In contrast, while prices of common bean jade and glutinous jade, which are mid-to-low-end jadeite rough stones, have also seen slight increases, the overall increase has been kept within 5%, and there has been no panic buying.
"Mining activities in Myanmar's jadeite mines are highly affected by geopolitics, and supply uncertainty is a long-term issue," added Mr. Zhang Qiang, Vice President of the Yunnan Province Jewelry and Jade Chamber of Commerce and a veteran jadeite trader. "In addition, the Myanmar government's policy adjustments on rough stone exports and increased efforts to combat illegal mining and smuggling have, to some extent, reduced the circulation in the market. These factors collectively make the scarcity of high-end jadeite even more prominent."
Looking ahead, experts generally believe that the tight supply of Myanmar jadeite raw materials will be difficult to fundamentally alleviate in the short term. With the gradual recovery of the global economy and the continuous growth in consumer demand for rare luxury goods, prices of high-quality jadeite will remain strong. However, for the mid-to-low-end market, prices will be more influenced by market demand and processing costs, showing more rational fluctuations. Investors and collectors should pay more attention to the quality, translucency, color, and craftsmanship of jadeite when entering the market, avoiding blind pursuit, to achieve asset preservation and appreciation.
This price adjustment also prompts in-depth reflection within the industry. Some believe that the jadeite industry may focus more on design innovation and brand building in the future, increasing added value to cope with rising raw material costs. At the same time, seeking alternative jade resources or developing new processing technologies may also become one of the directions for industry development.
