Myanmar Jadeite Rough Market Sees Renewed Volatility: High-Quality Stones Soar, Industry Faces Structural Challenges

【Yangon/Beijing】 The global jadeite rough market has once again become a focal point for the industry. According to firsthand information obtained by our reporter from major jadeite mining areas and rough trading centers in Myanmar, since the beginning of March, jadeite rough prices have shown a significant two-tiered trend. Among them, high-quality ice-jade and glass-jade rough stones have seen particularly prominent increases, while prices for mid-to-low-end categories have remained relatively stable despite some fluctuations.

Industry insiders generally believe that this price anomaly is not a short-term phenomenon but rather the result of a confluence of factors, including long-term supply tension in Myanmar's jadeite sector, structural changes in market demand, and geopolitical influences. Data indicates that since the second half of last year, the overall supply of Myanmar jadeite rough has decreased by over 15% year-on-year. Specifically, the increasing difficulty and cost of mining at premium sites have further exacerbated the scarcity of high-quality raw materials.

“The scarcity of high-end jadeite rough has reached an unprecedented level,” stated Professor Li Ming, a senior expert from the China Jewelry & Jade Industry Association and a renowned jade appraiser, in an interview with our publication. “With global wealth growth and consumers' pursuit of rare luxury goods, the investment and collection value of high-quality jadeite is increasingly prominent. This supply-demand imbalance has led to a spiraling increase in the prices of top-tier rough stones, a trend expected to persist for some time.”

Market Data Insights: Astonishing Gains for High-Quality Rough

According to market monitoring data, in March, the average transaction prices for high-quality ice-jade and glass-jade rough from major producing areas such as Hpakant and Mogok in Myanmar increased by approximately 8% to 12% month-on-month, with some exceptional pieces seeing gains exceeding 15%. In contrast, prices for mid-to-low-end rough, such as glutinous-jade and bean-jade, fluctuated within 2%, demonstrating the market's differentiated valuation for various jadeite qualities.

A Yangon rough trader, who preferred to remain anonymous, commented: “Currently, a fine-quality ice-jade bangle material might cost 30% to 50% more than it did at the same time last year. Even so, buyers, especially those with strong purchasing power from mainland China and Hong Kong, are still flocking to the market.”

Industry Challenges and Future Outlook

This price divergence has profound implications for the entire jadeite industry chain. For downstream processing enterprises, the cost of acquiring high-quality raw materials has risen sharply, squeezing profit margins. Some less financially robust companies may face the risk of transformation or elimination. Simultaneously, this has prompted some enterprises to turn their attention to the mid-to-low-end market, enhancing the added value of ordinary jadeite through exquisite carving techniques and creative designs.

Professor Li Ming further analyzed: “In the long run, the non-renewable nature of Myanmar's jadeite resources dictates their scarcity value. In the future, the industry will focus more on rational resource utilization and sustainable development. Concurrently, the application of technology in jadeite authentication and traceability will become increasingly widespread to protect consumer rights and maintain market order.”

Looking ahead, the Myanmar jadeite rough market will continue to be full of uncertainties. Geopolitical complexities, adjustments in mining policies, and global economic fluctuations could all impact the market. However, what is certain is that the investment and collection value of high-quality jadeite will continue to be recognized. For industry participants, how to seize opportunities amidst challenges and achieve innovative development in the context of limited resources will be a crucial task.
