Liangshan Southern Red Agate Raw Material Supply Tightens, Market Prices Poised for Structural Increase

【Liangshan, Sichuan】 Recent developments in the mining activities within Sichuan's Liangshan region, a pivotal production hub for Southern Red Agate, indicate a significant shift. According to on-site observations and industry insider reports, the output of high-quality Southern Red Agate rough stones is experiencing a sustained decline. This trend not only signals an impending tightening of market supply but also casts a shadow of anticipated structural price increases over the future trajectory of Southern Red Agate prices.

Southern Red Agate, cherished for its warm texture, vibrant red hues, and unique historical and cultural significance, has long been a favorite among collectors and consumers. The Liangshan area, particularly mining regions like Meigu and Zhaojue, is renowned as the “Home of Southern Red Agate” due to the superior quality of its output. However, after years of intensive exploitation, the gradual depletion of mineral resources has become an undeniable reality.

“Based on our latest data, the output of premium Southern Red Agate rough stones in the Liangshan region during the first half of this year has decreased by approximately 15%-20% year-on-year,” stated Professor Li Ming, Vice President of the Gems & Jewelry Trade Association of China and a veteran jade expert, in an interview with our reporter. “This downward trend has been particularly pronounced in recent years, especially for exquisite pieces with perfect appearance, pure color, and no cracks or flaws, whose scarcity is rapidly increasing.” Professor Li further elaborated that this phenomenon is not a short-term fluctuation but an inevitable consequence of diminished geological resource endowment due to long-term over-extraction.

The contraction in market supply has directly impacted rough stone transactions. According to several rough stone suppliers in Liangshan, the current demand for premium Southern Red Agate rough significantly outstrips available supply, with some top-grade rough even becoming “hard to find.” Data suggests that over the past three months, the average transaction price for first-grade Southern Red Agate rough in the Liangshan area has quietly risen by about 8%-12%, while prices for top-tier rough with collection potential have seen increases exceeding 15%.

“In the past, we could relatively easily find some cost-effective rough stones, but now, even for ordinary quality materials, prices are soaring,” lamented Mr. Wang, a seasoned merchant who has been involved in Southern Red Agate procurement in Liangshan for over a decade. “Our procurement costs are getting higher and higher, and we are forced to pass these costs on to the end products.”

This tight supply situation is expected to have a profound impact on the entire Southern Red Agate industry chain. Firstly, an increase in retail prices for end products is highly probable. Secondly, to cope with raw material shortages, some businesses may turn to seeking alternatives or increasing the utilization rate of existing inventory. Furthermore, for jade carvers who rely on high-quality Southern Red Agate for their creations, the scarcity of raw materials will severely test their design capabilities and ingenuity in material application.

Looking ahead, Professor Li Ming advises: “Against the backdrop of increasingly scarce resources, the Southern Red Agate industry should prioritize sustainable development. On one hand, the government should strengthen supervision over mineral resource protection and rational mining, combating illegal extraction. On the other hand, businesses and consumers should cultivate correct values, no longer blindly pursuing large carat weights, but focusing more on the cultural connotations, carving craftsmanship, and artistic value of Southern Red Agate.”

Concurrently, there is an industry-wide call to increase research and development investment in Southern Red Agate, exploring new identification technologies and optimization treatment methods to enhance the utilization efficiency of existing resources. With the sustained demand for high-quality Southern Red Agate and the increasing depletion of origin resources, the market value of Liangshan Southern Red Agate is expected to show a more significant structural increase in the coming years, further highlighting the preservation and appreciation potential of premium Southern Red Agate. Investors and collectors, while appreciating its artistic value, should also closely monitor origin dynamics and rationally assess market trends.
