Myanmar Jadeite Rough Supply Continues to Tighten, High-End Market Prices Reach New Peaks

【Yangon/Beijing】 In March 2024, the global jadeite market once again focused on Myanmar, the country of origin. According to the latest market analysis report, the supply of Myanmar jadeite rough continues to show a tight trend due to a combination of geopolitical factors, adjustments in mining policies, and the increasing depletion of mine resources. This month, especially high-quality ice-jade and glass-jade roughs, their market transaction prices have risen significantly, with some top-grade materials even breaking historical highs, while the prices of mid-to-low-end jadeite rough have remained relatively stable.

Professor Li Ming, a senior industry analyst and specially appointed expert of the Gemological Association of China (GAC), pointed out: “The tight supply of Myanmar jadeite rough is not a short-term phenomenon, but rather the result of long-term accumulation of multiple factors. On the one hand, the uncertainty of the domestic situation in Myanmar directly affects the normal mining and transportation efficiency; on the other hand, the tightening of Myanmar's government policies on jadeite mining and export, aimed at protecting national resources, has further restricted market circulation. It is expected that this tight supply situation will continue for the next few years.”

Strong Demand in High-End Market, Astonishing Price Increases

Data shows that the price increase of high-end jadeite rough this month is particularly striking. According to incomplete statistics, the average transaction price of high-quality ice-jade and glass-jade rough has increased by approximately 15% to 20% compared to last month, with some top-grade materials with excellent appearance and suitable size even showing increases of over 30%. Taking a piece of ice-jade with a vibrant green color, weighing about 1 kilogram, as an example, its starting price at the Yangon public auction has doubled compared to the same period last year, and the final transaction price often far exceeds expectations. This reflects that the strong demand for high-end jadeite globally, especially in the Chinese market, has not weakened, but has become even more sought after due to its scarcity.

“The scarcity of high-end jadeite determines its investment attributes,” said a veteran Hong Kong jadeite merchant who wished to remain anonymous. “In the current global economic situation, many high-net-worth investors are turning their attention to rare artworks and collectibles with potential for value preservation and appreciation, and jadeite is undoubtedly one of the best among them. The rarer and higher quality the jadeite, the greater its risk resistance and appreciation potential.”

Mid-to-Low-End Market Performance Stable, Attention Slightly Decreased

In stark contrast to the booming high-end market, the mid-to-low-end jadeite rough market performed relatively stably. Although the overall supply has also decreased, due to the greater elasticity of market demand and the availability of many substitutes, its price fluctuations have been small. The prices of some ordinary glutinous-jade and bean-jade roughs have only slightly increased, and even the prices of some lower-quality scraps have slightly decreased.

Professor Li Ming analyzed: “The mid-to-low-end jadeite market is more affected by consumer-level demand, and its prices are more sensitive to the macroeconomic environment and consumer purchasing power. In the current period of economic transformation, consumers are more cautious about spending on non-essentials, leading to a decrease in attention to mid-to-low-end jadeite. This has also prompted some merchants to shift their focus to high-end exquisite products to cope with market changes.”

Future Outlook: Challenges and Opportunities Coexist

Looking ahead, the Myanmar jadeite rough market will continue to face numerous challenges. The continuous tightening of the supply side will be the norm, which will undoubtedly further push up the prices of high-end jadeite. However, for the entire jadeite industry chain, this also means higher added value and more refined processing requirements. Master Wang, a jade carving master, believes: “The scarcity of raw materials will prompt us to cherish every piece of rough more, improve carving techniques and design levels, and maximize the artistic value of limited resources.”

At the same time, the industry should also pay attention to market transparency and sustainable development. Establishing a more fair and open trading mechanism and combating illegal mining and smuggling are crucial for maintaining the healthy development of the industry. In addition, with the advancement of technology, synthetic jadeite and optimization treatment technologies are becoming increasingly mature, and both consumers and businesses need to improve their identification capabilities to ensure market order.

Overall, the Myanmar jadeite rough market is undergoing a profound transformation. High-end exquisite products will continue to lead the market trend and become a hot spot for collection and investment. The mid-to-low-end market, on the other hand, needs to seek new breakthroughs through innovative design and refined services in fierce competition. For practitioners, this is both a challenge and a major opportunity for transformation, upgrading, and achieving sustainable development.
