Liangshan Southern Red Agate Production Faces Resource Scarcity, Market Undergoes Structural Adjustment and Price Surge

Liangshan, Sichuan, May 22, 2024 – Recent reports from the core production areas of Southern Red Agate in Liangshan, Sichuan, indicate a sustained decline in the extraction of high-quality raw Southern Red Agate stones. This has led to a structural tightening of market supply. This development not only signals a potential new round of price increases for Southern Red Agate but also reflects a deeper global trend of increasing scarcity of precious mineral resources, posing significant challenges to the future development of the entire Southern Red Agate industry chain.

According to local mining observers, since the beginning of this year, the output of raw stones from major Southern Red Agate mining sites in Liangshan, particularly those renowned for high-quality colors such as persimmon red and brocade red, has decreased by approximately 15%-20% compared to the same period last year. More notably, the proportion of premium-grade material suitable for collection or high-end carving has seen an even more significant drop, estimated to exceed 30%. This scarcity of high-quality raw materials has directly led to a sharp increase in pressure on the supply side of the market.

“The formation of Southern Red Agate requires extremely stringent geological conditions and vast geological ages; its resources are not inexhaustible,” stated Professor Li Ming from the Gemology Institute of China University of Geosciences (Wuhan) in an interview with our reporter. “Liangshan Southern Red Agate has been mined for decades. Early over-exploitation and a lack of scientific planning led to the depletion of shallow, high-quality veins. Now, as mining depth continuously increases, costs are surging, while both the yield rate and quality are declining. This is an inevitable market reaction.”

Market data shows that over the past three months, the average transaction price of Liangshan Southern Red Agate raw stones has increased by approximately 8%-12%, with premium-grade materials seeing an even greater surge of over 15%. It is anticipated that over the next 6-12 months, as existing inventory is further consumed, prices will continue on an upward trajectory, with overall increases potentially reaching 20%-30%.

Industry Chain Faces Challenges and Transformation Opportunities

The scarcity of high-quality raw materials has directly impacted downstream carving, processing, and retail sectors. Many small and medium-sized studios and brands are grappling with soaring raw material costs and squeezed profit margins. However, this situation is also spurring internal transformation and upgrading within the industry.

“We are actively adjusting our procurement strategies and increasing investment in design and craftsmanship innovation,” said an anonymous representative from a Chengdu-based Southern Red Agate brand. “In the context of raw material scarcity, how to imbue each piece of Southern Red Agate with higher artistic value through exquisite carving techniques and unique creativity is key to standing out in market competition.”

Experts generally believe that the future Southern Red Agate market will exhibit a two-tiered polarization. On one hand, high-quality, rare-colored Southern Red Agate will continue to appreciate due to its collectible and investment value, becoming a focal point for high-end collectors. On the other hand, ordinary-quality Southern Red Agate will need to expand its market through more refined designs and broader application scenarios (such as fashion accessories, cultural and creative products) to cope with cost pressures.

Sustainable Development and Industry Regulation

The changes in the Liangshan Southern Red Agate production area once again sound an alarm for the sustainable utilization of mineral resources. Industry insiders call for government departments to strengthen scientific management and planning of mineral resources, severely crack down on illegal mining, and encourage ecological restoration in mining areas. Concurrently, industry associations should guide enterprises to embrace sustainable development concepts, promoting the deep excavation of Southern Red Agate’s cultural and artistic value, rather than solely relying on resource consumption.

Looking ahead, the Liangshan Southern Red Agate market will enter a new normal characterized by resource constraints. How to create greater value from limited resources, and how to balance economic benefits with ecological protection, will be crucial questions for all Southern Red Agate practitioners. This structural adjustment may well serve as an opportunity for the Southern Red Agate industry to move towards a more mature and sustainable future.
