Liangshan Southern Red Agate Market Faces Structural Price Hike Amid Supply-Demand Imbalance
Liangshan, Sichuan, October 26, 2023 – The core production area of Chinese Southern Red Agate, Liangshan in Sichuan province, is currently experiencing significant changes in its mining dynamics, drawing widespread attention from the industry. According to an in-depth investigation by our reporter and various reliable sources, the output of high-quality Southern Red Agate rough stones in the Liangshan region is showing a notable decline. This not only exacerbates the tight supply in the market but also signals a potential structural price increase for Southern Red Agate.
For an extended period, Liangshan Southern Red Agate has been highly sought after by collectors and consumers due to its unique persimmon red and cherry red hues, as well as its warm, lustrous texture. However, after years of intensive mining, both the reserves and quality of the mineral deposits have been affected. Unofficial data from the local mining department in Liangshan indicates that the extraction volume of first-grade Southern Red Agate rough stones has decreased by approximately 15% to 20% year-on-year over the past year. The output of second-grade and lower-grade rough stones has not been able to effectively compensate for this deficit. This trend has directly led to a further increase in the scarcity of high-end Southern Red Agate in the market.
"The increasing scarcity of high-quality raw materials is the core reason for the current market fluctuations," stated Professor Wang Ming, a member of the expert committee of the Gems & Jewelry Trade Association of China and a senior jade appraiser, in an interview with our newspaper. "The formation of Southern Red Agate requires a long geological process, and its non-renewable nature dictates that mining volume will inevitably decrease year by year. Especially in some old mining areas, premium resources are nearly exhausted, and newly discovered veins generally exhibit lower quality than before. This makes it difficult for the market to meet the demand for high-quality Southern Red Agate, making price increases a natural consequence."
Market data shows that over the past six months, the average transaction price of first-grade Southern Red Agate rough stones from the Liangshan origin has risen by approximately 10% to 15%, with some rare varieties seeing increases of over 20%. The retail market has responded accordingly, with prices for high-end Southern Red Agate jewelry and carvings generally increasing by 5% to 10%. Industry insiders predict that if the current mining trend continues, the overall price of Southern Red Agate, especially premium categories, could still see an additional 5% to 10% increase within the next year.
The tight supply has also prompted the market to further appreciate the value of Southern Red Agate. Some investors and collectors are beginning to view Southern Red Agate as an artwork and investment product with high potential for value preservation and appreciation. However, Professor Wang Ming also cautioned that while pursuing high returns, investors should be wary of speculative behavior in the market and enhance their ability to distinguish the authenticity and quality of Southern Red Agate.
In response to the reduction in high-quality rough stones, the industry is actively exploring new development paths. On one hand, some businesses and processing enterprises are shifting towards refined processing, enhancing the added value of ordinary-grade rough stones through superb carving techniques and creative designs. On the other hand, there are also calls for strengthening the scientific management and sustainable exploitation of mineral resources to prevent irreversible damage to the ecological environment caused by over-exploitation.
Looking ahead, the Liangshan Southern Red Agate market is poised to enter a phase of transition from "quantity" to "quality." Against the backdrop of tightening supply, the collection value and investment attributes of high-quality Southern Red Agate will become even more prominent. Concurrently, the industry also needs to make greater efforts in resource protection, cultural inheritance, and market standardization to ensure the healthy and sustainable development of the Southern Red Agate industry.
