Myanmar Jadeite Rough Supply Remains Tight, High-End Material Prices Soar, Reshaping Market Dynamics
【Yangon/Beijing】 The global jadeite market has recently refocused on Myanmar, where the supply of rough jadeite, its primary source, continues to be tight. This has led to a significant upward trend in rough stone prices. Of particular note, high-quality jadeite rough, especially rare varieties like 'ice-jade' (Bing Zhong) and 'glass-jade' (Bo Li Zhong), has seen price increases far exceeding market expectations, profoundly influencing the future direction of the entire jadeite industry. Industry experts indicate that this phenomenon not only reflects an exacerbation of supply-demand imbalance but also signals that the jadeite market is entering a new phase driven primarily by scarcity and quality.
According to the latest market monitoring data, as of this month, the overall price index for Myanmar jadeite rough has risen by approximately 8%-12% compared to the previous quarter. Among these, top-tier materials such as 'ice-jade' and 'glass-jade' have seen particularly astonishing increases, with some premium batches recording month-on-month growth of over 20%. In contrast, prices for mid-to-low-end jadeite rough, while also experiencing slight upticks, have remained relatively stable, with increases generally contained within 3%-5%. This suggests sustained market demand for high-end jadeite, while mid-to-low-end products are more influenced by cost transmission.
“Adjustments in Myanmar's jadeite mining policies, increasingly stringent environmental regulations, and geopolitical factors are the main reasons for the persistent tight supply of raw materials,” stated Dr. Li Mingyuan, a renowned scholar of jade culture and an adjunct professor at the Gemological Institute of China University of Geosciences (Wuhan), in an interview with our reporter. “Particularly in recent years, the Myanmar government has imposed stricter controls on jadeite mining, aiming for sustainable resource utilization and maximum value. This has undoubtedly reduced the total volume of rough stones entering the market, especially those top-grade materials with superior appearance and scarce reserves.”
Market data shows that over the past year, the overall export volume of Myanmar jadeite rough has declined by approximately 15%, while global demand for high-quality jadeite has maintained a growth of about 5% during the same period. This 'scissors gap' effect has directly pushed up the prices of high-end raw materials. It is estimated that the total annual volume of 'ice-jade' and 'glass-jade' rough entering the global market is now less than 70% of what it was five years ago. In major jadeite trading centers like Hong Kong and Guangzhou, auction prices for some top-tier rough stones have repeatedly hit new highs, with some transactions even exceeding a 30% premium.
Dr. Li Mingyuan further analyzed: “The scarcity of high-end jadeite determines its increasingly prominent investment attribute. In the current context of increased global economic uncertainty, top-tier jadeite, which combines ornamental, collectible, and value-preserving functions, is becoming an important option for asset allocation among high-net-worth individuals. This investment demand further intensifies the competition for rare raw materials.”
Looking ahead, the polarization trend in the jadeite market will become more pronounced. High-end jadeite, due to its non-renewable nature and unique cultural value, is expected to maintain its strong price or even continue to rise. Mid-to-low-end jadeite, however, may face greater market competition, with its price trends more dependent on processing costs, design innovation, and market penetration. For jadeite processing enterprises, how to secure a stable and high-quality supply of raw materials, and how to enhance product added value with limited resources, will be key challenges in the future.
At the same time, the industry also calls for strengthening international cooperation and establishing more transparent and standardized trading mechanisms for jadeite rough to ensure healthy and sustainable market development. Consumers, when purchasing jadeite products, should also pay more attention to quality and origin, invest rationally, and avoid blindly following trends. Jadeite, as a treasure of Eastern culture, its value will become increasingly precious with the passage of time and the prominence of its scarcity.
