Industry Observation

In 2023, the global jade and jewelry industry demonstrated a strong recovery momentum after enduring the challenges of the pandemic. Various jewelry exhibitions and industry events have undoubtedly served as crucial barometers of market vitality. From major international shows to distinctive regional activities, they not only witnessed significant growth in transaction volume but also heralded the industry's deeper exploration into digital transformation and sustainable development.

International Exhibitions: Record Highs in Transaction Volume and Exhibitor Count

Taking the Hong Kong International Jewellery Show, held annually in spring, as an example, the 2023 exhibition attracted over 2,500 exhibitors from 38 countries and regions, representing a 25% increase from 2022. Ms. Chan, Jewelry Industry Consultant at the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC), stated in an interview with us: “The total transaction volume of this exhibition reached a record-breaking US$2.5 billion. Among this, high-quality jadeite and Hetian jade accounted for over 15% of transactions, indicating the sustained enthusiasm of the Asian market for traditional jade.”

Similarly, the JCK Las Vegas jewelry show in the United States also reported a robust recovery. According to the latest data from Reed Exhibitions, the organizer of JCK, order volumes for jade products, especially high-end jadeite and distinctive jasper, increased by 18% compared to the previous year during the 2023 show. David Lee, a veteran jade dealer from New York, commented: “The accumulated purchasing power during the pandemic, coupled with consumers' pursuit of unique products with cultural connotations, were the main reasons for the outstanding performance of the jade category at this exhibition.”

Domestic Market: Thriving Regional Exhibitions

In mainland China, regional jade exhibitions are flourishing. For instance, the annual China (Suzhou) International Jade Culture Expo, held every autumn in Suzhou, has become an important jade trading platform in the Yangtze River Delta region. The 2023 expo attracted over 500 domestic and international exhibitors, with booths featuring specialty jades such as Xinjiang Hetian jade, Liaoning Xiuyan jade, and Guangdong Jieyang jadeite drawing large crowds. According to the organizers, the intended transaction volume during the exhibition exceeded 800 million RMB, a 30% year-on-year increase. Professor Wang, from the Jade Carving Department of Suzhou Art & Design Technology Institute, pointed out: “These regional exhibitions not only promote the development of the local jade industry but also provide valuable opportunities for young jade carvers to showcase their talents and connect with the market.”

Furthermore, the Guangzhou International Jewellery & Jade Exhibition and the Shenzhen International Jewellery Fair continue to maintain their status as top domestic jewelry exhibitions, particularly for categories like jadeite and Nanhong agate, attracting a large number of professional buyers and collectors. Statistics show that during the 2023 Shenzhen International Jewellery Fair, the transaction volume for high-end jadeite rough and finished products exceeded 1 billion RMB, an increase of 20% compared to 2022.

Digital Transformation: Online-Offline Integration as the New Normal

Notably, the pandemic accelerated the digital transformation of jade industry exhibitions. Many exhibitions began adopting a 'hybrid' online-offline model. For example, the Hong Kong International Jewellery Show launched the 'Click2Match' online business matching platform, which continues to provide networking opportunities for buyers and sellers even after the exhibition concludes. According to HKTDC statistics, online transaction intentions facilitated through this platform increased by 40% compared to last year.

Domestic exhibitions are also actively embracing digitalization. The China (Suzhou) International Jade Culture Expo collaborated for the first time with live-streaming platforms like Douyin and Kuaishou, inviting renowned streamers for online tours and product promotions. This attracted over 5 million online viewers, effectively expanding the exhibition's influence. Dr. Li, a researcher at Peking University's Institute of Cultural Industries, believes: “Digitalization not only enhances the reach of exhibitions but also brings new marketing ideas and consumer groups, especially younger generations, to the traditional jade industry.”

Challenges and Outlook

Despite the strong recovery, jade industry exhibitions also face challenges such as global economic uncertainty, fluctuations in raw material prices, and changes in consumer aesthetic preferences. However, with technological advancements and increasing consumer demand for personalized, culturally valuable products, jade industry exhibitions are evolving towards greater specialization, diversification, and internationalization. In the future, we anticipate the emergence of more innovative models and the further dissemination of jade culture worldwide.
