Industry Observation: AI-Powered Spectroscopic Revolution: Jade Identification Enters the 'Smart Eye' Era

【Global Jade Network, June 18, 2024】In recent years, with the rapid advancement of technology, the field of jade identification is undergoing an unprecedented transformation. The ongoing struggle between traditional manual experience-based identification and increasingly sophisticated counterfeiting methods has created an urgent demand for more precise, efficient, and objective identification technologies. Against this backdrop, the deep integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and advanced spectroscopic analysis is ushering jade identification into a new 'smart eye' era.

AI Algorithms Drive Beyond the Limits of the Naked Eye

In the past, jade identification relied heavily on the experience, vision, and professional knowledge of appraisers, making subjectivity unavoidable. However, with the maturity of big data and AI deep learning technologies, this situation is changing. According to Professor Li Ming's team from the School of Gemology, China University of Geosciences (Wuhan), in collaboration with the Institute of Automation, Chinese Academy of Sciences, they have developed a jade image recognition system based on Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN). This system has made significant progress in distinguishing between Xinjiang Hotan jade, Qinghai jade, and Russian jade. By analyzing microscopic features such as the structure, texture, and luster of jade, the system achieved an accuracy rate of 96.8% in identifying hundreds of samples in the laboratory, far exceeding the average level of ordinary appraisers. The team's latest research findings were published in the second issue of the 'Journal of Gemmology' in 2024, attracting widespread attention in the industry.

“The core advantage of AI lies in its learning ability and efficiency in processing massive amounts of data,” Professor Li explained. “It can learn characteristic patterns from tens of thousands of genuine and counterfeit jade samples, capturing subtle differences imperceptible to the naked eye, thereby providing objective and quantitative basis for identification.”

Spectroscopic Technology Innovation Reveals Intrinsic Nature

In addition to image recognition, spectroscopic analysis techniques are playing an increasingly important role in jade identification. Non-destructive testing methods such as Raman Spectroscopy, Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), and X-ray Fluorescence Spectroscopy (XRF) have become powerful tools for identifying jade types, origins, and treatment methods (such as filling and dyeing).

Taking jadeite as an example, traditional dyeing treatments are often judged by observing color distribution and structural characteristics with the naked eye, but high-quality fakes are difficult to distinguish. Zhang Hua, a senior engineer at the Guangzhou Gold and Silver Jewelry Testing Center, stated: “Our portable Raman spectrometer can quickly detect organic dye components in jadeite, such as the epoxy resin and organic dyes commonly used in 'B+C goods,' within a few seconds. This technology significantly improves the efficiency and accuracy of identification, especially in large exhibitions and market spot checks, effectively curbing the circulation of counterfeit and inferior products.” According to statistics, since 2023, the center has successfully identified over 3,000 pieces of optimized jadeite, Hotan jade, and other types through spectroscopic analysis, effectively safeguarding consumer rights.

Multi-dimensional Integration to Build a 'Smart Identification Platform'

Looking ahead, the trend in jade identification technology is multi-dimensional and intelligent integration. Dr. Wang Qiang's team from the School of Materials Science and Engineering, Tongji University, Shanghai, is developing a 'smart identification platform' that integrates hyperspectral imaging, AI deep learning, and blockchain traceability technology. This platform can not only perform multi-spectral data acquisition and AI-assisted analysis of jade but also combine identification data with blockchain technology to generate a unique 'digital ID card' for each piece of jade, achieving full lifecycle traceability from rough stone to finished product, effectively combating counterfeiting and origin fraud.

“Our goal is to establish a globally shared big data platform for jade,” Dr. Wang said in an interview. “By converging jade sample data from around the world, combined with AI's powerful analytical capabilities, we can continuously improve the accuracy and standardization of identification, ultimately achieving 'transparency' and 'trust' in the field of jade identification.”

Although AI and spectroscopic technology have brought revolutionary advancements to jade identification, experts also warn that no technology can completely replace human professional judgment. Future identification work will be a human-machine collaborative model, where advanced technology provides objective data support, and experienced appraisers make the final comprehensive judgment. This 'human-machine combination' model will ensure that the field of jade identification, while pursuing efficiency and precision, still retains a deep understanding of jade culture and artistic value.

It is foreseeable that with the continuous maturation and popularization of these cutting-edge technologies, the jade market will become more standardized and transparent, and consumer confidence will be significantly enhanced. The 'smart eye' era of the jade industry has arrived.
