Jadeite Auction Market Blooms: High-End Jadeite and Hetian Jade Lead Gains, Young Collectors Emerge as New Trend

【Industry Observation】

Recently, the global jadeite auction market has shown a strong recovery, especially in the 2024 spring auction season, where high-end jadeite and top-tier Hetian jade have performed exceptionally well, repeatedly setting new transaction records. This phenomenon not only reflects the boost in market confidence but also signals new changes in the field of jadeite collection.

I. High-End Jadeite: Scarcity Drives Continuous Price Increases

At the recently concluded Sotheby's Hong Kong Spring Auction's “Magnificent Jewels and Jadeite” sale, a natural imperial green jadeite bead necklace named “Heavenly Blessed Fortune” sold for an astounding HKD 180 million (approximately USD 23 million), setting a new auction record for jadeite bead necklaces in the past five years. According to Ms. Wen Haoyi, Head of Jewelry, Sotheby’s Asia, this necklace comprises 33 imperial green jadeite beads, each exceeding 15mm in diameter, boasting intense and uniform color, and exquisite translucency, making it extremely rare in the market. The buyer was a private collector from Greater China, highlighting the strong demand for high-end jadeite.

Meanwhile, mainland auction houses such as China Guardian Beijing and Duoyunxuan Shanghai also reported good news. At China Guardian's spring auction, a Qing Dynasty old pit glass-type full-green jadeite bangle, estimated at RMB 30 million, ultimately sold for RMB 45 million (including commission), an astonishing premium rate of 50%. According to Mr. Li Mingxuan, Head of China Guardian's Jewelry Department, the increasing depletion of high-quality jadeite mineral resources has led to its growing scarcity value, coupled with sustained strong market demand, which are the main factors driving price increases.

II. Hetian Jade: Value Return for Fine Specimens, Empowered by Cultural Attributes

Beyond jadeite, top-tier Hetian jade has also demonstrated strong vitality in the auction market. At the recent “Prosperous Jade Carvings” special sale held by “Kunlun Jade Yuan” auction house in Urumqi, Xinjiang, a Hetian jade seed material carving titled “Nine Dragons Presenting Auspiciousness” by Chinese jade carving master Guo Wensheng, hammered at RMB 28 million, far exceeding its pre-sale estimate of RMB 18 million. The piece was carved from a 12-kilogram mutton-fat white seed material, featuring warm jade quality and exquisite craftsmanship, fully showcasing the unique charm of Hetian jade.

Ms. Chen Lihua, Director of the Jewelry and Jadeite Department at Shanghai Dongpai International Auction Co., Ltd., pointed out that in recent years, the market's perception of Hetian jade has become more rational. The value of exquisite Hetian jade—those with superior quality, superb craftsmanship, and rich cultural connotations—is steadily returning. She believes that Hetian jade is not only a precious mineral but also a carrier of traditional Chinese culture, and its profound cultural attributes add unique value to collection.

III. Young Collectors Entering the Market: Subtle Shifts in Market Structure

Notably, the current surge in the jadeite auction market, in addition to the participation of traditional seasoned collectors, has seen a significant presence of young collectors. According to Ms. Wang Lin, a specialist in Christie’s Asia’s Jewelry and Jadeite Department, in recent online auctions and offline previews, the number of buyers aged 30-45 has notably increased. They generally show strong interest in modern jadeite jewelry with strong design aesthetics, high wearability, and jade carvings with unique artistic styles.

“These young collectors not only value the inherent worth of jadeite but also its artistic and cultural significance. Their entry injects new vitality into the jadeite market and drives innovation in auction houses' selection of lots and marketing strategies,” Ms. Wang Lin added. For example, cross-disciplinary design works that combine traditional jadeite craftsmanship with modern aesthetic concepts have been warmly received by young collectors.

IV. Market Outlook: Balancing Rational Investment with Cultural Inheritance

Looking ahead, the jadeite auction market is expected to continue its steady growth. However, experts also advise collectors to remain rational when investing in jadeite, focusing on its quality, scarcity, craftsmanship, and cultural connotations, and avoiding blind speculation. At the same time, with the popularization of jadeite culture and the rising interest of younger generations in collecting, the jadeite market will become more diversified and internationalized, with artistic value and cultural inheritance serving as important dual engines driving market development.
