Industry Observation
In recent years, with the rapid development of internet technology and profound changes in consumer shopping habits, the traditional jade industry is undergoing an unprecedented digital transformation. E-commerce platforms, as the core driving force of this change, have not only broadened the sales channels for jade but also brought revolutionary innovations in product traceability, cultural dissemination, and consumer experience. According to the latest “2023 China Jewelry and Jade Industry Development Report” released by the Gemological Association of China (GAC), the online jade transaction volume in China exceeded 150 billion RMB for the first time last year, a year-on-year increase of 32%, accounting for 28% of the overall jade market. It is estimated that by 2025, this proportion will exceed 40%.
Live Streaming E-commerce: Activating New Consumer Groups
Live streaming e-commerce is undoubtedly a key factor driving the explosive growth of online jade sales. Live streams on short video platforms like Douyin and Kuaishou, with their intuitive and interactive features, have significantly lowered the barrier for consumers to understand and purchase jade. For example, in Ruili, Yunnan, the Jiegao Border Trade Zone, known as the “First City for Jade Live Streaming,” hosts thousands of live streams daily, attracting jade enthusiasts from across the country and even globally. According to statistics from the Ruili City Bureau of Commerce, the jade live streaming transaction volume in the Jiegao area alone exceeded 60 billion RMB in 2023. Among them, the famous streamer “Jade Lao Wang” (real name: Wang Jianguo) once set a record of over 100 million RMB in sales in just 3 hours during a single live broadcast, with an average viewership of millions per session.
Trust Mechanisms: Blockchain and AI Empowerment
Trust is at the core of jade transactions. In traditional offline transactions, consumers often rely on expert appraisals. In the e-commerce environment, establishing and maintaining this trust relationship has become paramount for platform development. Currently, several leading jade e-commerce platforms have begun actively exploring the application of blockchain technology in jade traceability. For instance, the “Yu Jian AI” platform, in collaboration with the Gemological Institute of China University of Geosciences (Wuhan), has launched a blockchain-based jade traceability system. Consumers can scan the unique QR code attached to the product to query information such as the origin, mining batch, processing technology, and appraisal certificate throughout the jade's lifecycle, significantly enhancing transaction transparency. Furthermore, the application of artificial intelligence (AI) in assisting jade appraisal, intelligent recommendations, and personalized customization is becoming increasingly mature. For example, a well-known jade e-commerce platform uses AI image recognition technology to perform preliminary defect detection and quality assessment on uploaded jade images, providing references for consumers.
Challenges and Opportunities Coexist
Despite the rapid growth of jade e-commerce, it faces numerous challenges. For instance, issues such as counterfeiting, false advertising, and imperfect after-sales service still exist, undermining consumer confidence. Additionally, how to balance the convenience of online sales with the ceremonial feel of offline experiences is a topic the industry needs to consider. In response, Mr. Shi Hongyue, Vice President and Secretary-General of the Gemological Association of China, pointed out at an industry forum: “The development of jade e-commerce should not only pursue speed but also focus on quality and standardization. Platforms should strengthen self-discipline, and government departments should increase supervision to jointly create a healthy and sustainable market environment.”
Looking ahead, jade e-commerce platforms will continue to develop towards intelligence, personalization, and globalization. With the popularization of technologies like 5G, VR/AR, immersive shopping experiences will become a new trend, allowing consumers to “touch” jade and feel its warmth in virtual spaces. At the same time, the rise of cross-border e-commerce will provide a broader stage for Chinese jade to go global. It is foreseeable that a more transparent, efficient, and vibrant digital jade era is accelerating its arrival.
