In the jade market, full of opportunities and challenges, innovation in authentication technology has always been a focal point. In recent years, with the deep integration of cutting-edge technologies such as artificial intelligence, spectroscopic analysis, and 3D imaging, jade authentication is transitioning from traditional empirical judgment to scientific quantitative analysis, providing unprecedented confidence for consumers and practitioners alike.
Technological Breakthroughs: From Naked Eye to 'Smart Eye'
Traditional jade authentication heavily relies on the experience of appraisers. However, facing increasingly sophisticated counterfeiting techniques and high-fidelity fakes, the naked eye alone can no longer meet market demands. Take, for example, the team led by Professor Li Ming from the Gemological Institute of China University of Geosciences (Wuhan). In collaboration with Huawei Cloud, they developed an AI-driven jade intelligent identification system based on deep learning. This system was trained on over 500,000 high-resolution jade images, covering mainstream categories such as Hetian jade, jadeite, and Dushan jade, as well as common treatments like dyeing and resin filling. According to data released by Professor Li at the “International Jewelry Technology and Market Forum” in March this year, the system's accuracy in distinguishing between natural (A-grade) jadeite and treated (B/C-grade) jadeite has reached an astonishing 98.7%, significantly exceeding the average level of traditional visual authentication (approximately 85%).
Furthermore, spectroscopic analysis technology is continuously upgrading. Peking University's School of Physics, in conjunction with the National Gemstone Testing Center (NGTC), has jointly developed a “Multi-dimensional Raman Spectroscopy Imaging System” capable of non-destructive, precise analysis of trace elements and crystal structures within jade. Dr. Wang Qiang, Director of NGTC Shenzhen Laboratory, stated: “This system can effectively distinguish natural jade from synthetic materials and even identify minute amounts of fillers, providing strong scientific evidence for authenticating highly difficult 'optimized treatments.' Last year, we successfully identified over 200 high-fidelity counterfeits that were previously challenging to characterize using this system.”
3D Imaging and Digital Fingerprints: Building New Cornerstones of Trust
Beyond compositional analysis, the physical characteristics of jade have also become a crucial dimension for authentication. Shanghai Jiao Tong University's School of Mechanical Engineering, in collaboration with the Shanghai Gem & Jewelry Exchange, has launched a “Jade Digital Fingerprint” system based on high-precision 3D scanning and computer vision technology. This system uses laser scanning to capture the unique 3D data of the jade's surface micro-textures and internal structural distribution, generating an immutable digital ID. Consumers can verify the uniqueness and authenticity by scanning a QR code on the jade and comparing it with the digital fingerprint in the database.
“Since its trial operation in the second half of last year, over 10,000 high-value jade products have registered their digital fingerprints,” introduced Mr. Zhang Hua, Vice President of the Shanghai Gem & Jewelry Exchange. “This has not only effectively curbed the phenomenon of 'passing off fakes as genuine' but also provided a new solution for the circulation and traceability of jade. We expect this technology to achieve over 60% penetration in the high-end jade market within the next three years.”

The application of these cutting-edge technologies is profoundly changing the ecosystem of the jade industry. On one hand, it enhances the accuracy and efficiency of authentication, reduces costs, and allows more consumers to purchase with confidence; on the other hand, it significantly increases the cost for counterfeiters, purifying market order.
However, challenges remain. The promotion of new technologies requires substantial capital investment and the cultivation of professional talents. Additionally, establishing unified industry standards and databases, as well as achieving data sharing and mutual recognition among different authentication institutions, are key issues that need to be addressed in the future. Ms. Liu Yan, Secretary-General of the Gems & Jewelry Trade Association of China, pointed out in a recent interview: “We are actively promoting the establishment of a national jade big data platform, ensuring data security and trustworthiness through blockchain technology. The goal is to make intelligent authentication technology a 'standard' for jade transactions within five years.”
