Hello, fellow collectors! I'm Old Zhang, a restorer who has been working with jade for half my life. Over the years, I've repaired countless Nanhong agates, and through this, I've come to understand their 'temperament' inside and out. Today, I won't hold back and will share all the Nanhong care secrets I've accumulated over the years.

Scenario Introduction:

I remember a few years ago, an old client brought me a Nanhong bracelet he had cherished for many years. When he first bought it, the Nanhong had a vibrant, rich persimmon red that was mesmerizing. But after a few years, it had become dull and even a bit dry, as if it had lost its vitality. The old client was heartbroken and asked if I could bring it back to life. After careful observation, I realized this was a classic case of improper care. In fact, Nanhong agate is not delicate, but if neglected, its natural warm beauty will be greatly diminished. Proper care, however, can not only make Nanhong glow but also make it more lustrous with wear, increasing its value manifold.

Core Techniques: The 'Nourishment' and 'Care' of Nanhong

  • 'Playing' is the Best Care: For Nanhong, human skin oil is the best natural moisturizer. Daily wearing and playing allow Nanhong to fully contact the oils secreted by the skin, forming a thin patina on its surface, which will improve its luster over time. My experience is to play with it for at least half an hour daily, gently wiping it with a clean cotton cloth or gloves, allowing the Nanhong to warm evenly and feel your temperature. Remember, always ensure your hands are clean before playing to avoid sweat and dirt directly contacting the Nanhong.

  • 'Pure Water' Cleansing: After wearing Nanhong for a long time, it inevitably accumulates dust or dirt. Gentle cleaning is essential at this point. I usually advise clients to rinse Nanhong with pure or distilled water, then gently wipe it dry with a soft cotton cloth. Be careful not to use water that is too hot or too cold to avoid sudden temperature changes damaging the internal structure of the Nanhong. Absolutely do not use chemical cleaners like soap or dish soap, as they will corrode the Nanhong's surface and cause it to lose its luster.

  • The 'Avoidance' Principle: Although Nanhong has a decent hardness, it should still be protected from bumps and knocks. In my repair cases, many Nanhong cracks were caused by accidental drops or friction with other hard objects. Furthermore, Nanhong should be kept away from high temperatures and direct strong sunlight. Prolonged exposure to sunlight can cause Nanhong to dehydrate, fade in color, and even crack. Therefore, it's best to remove Nanhong and store it properly when showering, swimming, cooking, or engaging in strenuous exercise.

  • 'Moisturizing' Storage: If Nanhong is not worn for a long time, the storage environment is also crucial. I recommend placing Nanhong separately in a soft cloth bag or jewelry box to avoid friction with other hard objects. More importantly, you can place a small cup of clean water in the storage box, or regularly take out the Nanhong and gently wipe it with a damp cotton cloth to maintain the humidity of its surrounding environment, preventing it from drying out.

Precautions:

* Avoid Contact with Chemicals: Perfumes, cosmetics, alcohol, and other chemical substances can corrode Nanhong, causing its surface to lose luster and even develop spots. Always apply makeup and perfume before wearing Nanhong.
* Regular Inspection: Develop a habit of regularly inspecting your Nanhong for looseness, cracks, or color changes. If you find any problems, address them promptly to prevent small issues from escalating.
* Never 'Rush for Success': Some collectors try to apply olive oil, baby oil, etc., to make Nanhong quickly develop a patina. My experience is that these oils can clog the pores of Nanhong, affecting its breathability and even causing it to become dull. The best 'oil nourishment' comes from the human body's own oils; patient playing is the right way.

Experience Summary:

Nanhong agate has a life of its own; it needs our careful care and nourishment. Proper care is not an overnight achievement but a habit accumulated over time. Just like my old client's Nanhong bracelet, after my cleaning and his consistent playing, six months later, the Nanhong regained its warm luster, even more understated and profound than when it was first bought. Remember, treat Nanhong like an old friend, give it enough love and patience, and it will surely repay you with its most beautiful form. I hope these experiences help everyone better care for their precious Nanhong treasures, allowing them to be passed down through generations, shining brightly forever!
