Myanmar Jadeite Rough Supply Tightens Further, High-End Market Prices Reach New Peaks
【Yangon/Shenzhen】 March 2024 has once again seen price fluctuations in the global jadeite rough market. According to industry insiders, affected by the sustained tight supply from major mining areas in Myanmar, the price of jadeite rough continued its upward trend this month. High-quality varieties such as ice jade and glass jade showed particularly significant increases, while prices for mid-to-low-end rough remained relatively stable. This trend not only reflects the strong market demand for premium jadeite but also foreshadows further price hikes for high-end finished jadeite products in the future.
Unabated Supply-Side Pressure, Highlighting Scarcity of High-End Rough
Since last year, mining activities in Myanmar's jadeite regions have been constrained by various factors, leading to a continuous decline in rough output. This month, the tight supply situation has not eased; instead, it appears to be intensifying. According to incomplete statistics, the total volume of Myanmar jadeite rough entering the Chinese market has decreased by approximately 15%-20% compared to the same period last year, with the decline for high-quality rough potentially exceeding 30%. This structural shortage has directly driven up the transaction prices of premium rough.
Professor Li Ming, a senior jadeite appraiser and a member of the Expert Committee of the Gems & Jewelry Trade Association of China, pointed out: “The scarcity of high-quality jadeite rough is the fundamental reason for its price increase. Varieties like ice jade and glass jade not only require extremely specific geological conditions for their formation but also have very low yields. Against a backdrop of continuous supply tightening, market competition is bound to become fiercer, making price increases inevitable.” Professor Li further analyzed that the current inventory of high-quality rough in the market is being rapidly depleted, and the discovery of new premium sources is challenging, making the future supply outlook not optimistic.
Market Data Reveals Increases, High Investment and Collection Enthusiasm
Data from a major jadeite trading market in Shenzhen indicates that in March, the average transaction price of ice jade and glass jade rough increased by approximately 8%-12% month-on-month, with some exceptional pieces seeing increases of over 15%. In contrast, prices for mid-to-low-end rough, such as glutinous jade and bean jade, saw increases limited to 2%-5%, with some common materials even experiencing slight declines. This suggests that market capital is rapidly flowing into the high-end jadeite sector, viewing it as an important investment vehicle for value preservation and appreciation.
An anonymous jadeite rough dealer stated: “Good ice jade material, once it appears, is usually snapped up very quickly. Many buyers are looking for investment and collection purposes; they are relatively less sensitive to price and place more emphasis on the rough's quality and future appreciation potential.”
Industry Outlook: High-End Market Continues to Thrive, Mid-to-Low-End May Face Challenges
Looking ahead, the industry generally believes that the tight supply of Myanmar jadeite rough is unlikely to change fundamentally in the short term. This means that prices for high-quality jadeite rough will remain strong and may even continue to rise. For the finished jadeite market, prices of high-end jadeite jewelry will also increase accordingly, further highlighting their investment and collection value.
However, the mid-to-low-end jadeite market may face greater challenges. Amid rising raw material costs and differentiated consumer purchasing power, mid-to-low-end jadeite products need to enhance market competitiveness through improved design and optimized craftsmanship. Simultaneously, with technological advancements, techniques for synthetic and treated jadeite are also continuously improving, which could impact the natural mid-to-low-end jadeite market.
In the long run, the jadeite industry will focus more on sustainable development and brand building. Transparent supply chains, authoritative appraisal certificates, and unique cultural connotations will be key for brands to win consumer trust. For investors and collectors, a deep understanding of jadeite knowledge and choosing reputable dealers will be crucial for mitigating risks and achieving value growth.
