Hello everyone, fellow jade enthusiasts! I'm Old Zhang, a jade collector for thirty years, and I have a special affection for these warm stones, especially Bi-Yu (碧玉, spinach jade). Today, I want to talk to you about Bi-Yu maintenance, which is not some mystical art, but rather practical life experience. I've seen too many cases where good Bi-Yu loses its luster due to improper care, and I've also personally revived some 'sick' jade pieces, restoring their brilliance. So, today I want to share my insights from these years without reservation.

Scenario Introduction:
I remember when I first started collecting Bi-Yu, I wasn't knowledgeable. I bought a Bi-Yu bangle with rich color and a wonderful oily sheen. I adored it and wore it every day. But before long, the bangle's luster began to dim, and it even felt a bit 'dry'. I was so anxious at the time, asking for advice everywhere, and slowly I figured out the way to maintain Bi-Yu. It's like raising a child; you have to be attentive and meticulous to help it grow healthily.

Core Techniques: Bi-Yu's 'Three Fears and Three Likes'

  • Fears High Temperatures, Likes Room Temperature: Bi-Yu is most afraid of high temperatures and direct sunlight. High temperatures can cause changes in the internal structure of the jade, leading to 'dehydration,' making it dry and even cracking. A friend of mine left his Bi-Yu bracelet in the car during summer, and soon found that the bracelet's color had lightened and its luster had significantly diminished. So, in summer, remember not to expose Bi-Yu to sunlight for extended periods, and certainly not near heat sources. When wearing it, try to avoid wearing it while taking hot showers or in high-temperature environments like kitchens for long periods. The best environment is a constant temperature and humidity indoors, ideally 20-25 degrees Celsius with about 60% humidity.

  • Fears Chemicals, Likes Clean Water: Although Bi-Yu has good hardness, it is very sensitive to acidic and alkaline chemical substances. Perfumes, detergents, soaps, cosmetics, etc., can all corrode the surface of Bi-Yu, causing it to lose its luster and even appear 'whitened.' I once accidentally sprayed perfume on a Bi-Yu pendant. I didn't pay attention at the time, but a few days later, I noticed a small area on the pendant's surface had turned somewhat white. Later, after repeated rinsing with clean water and wiping with a soft cloth, it slowly recovered. Therefore, when washing or applying makeup daily, it's best to remove your Bi-Yu. Regularly cleaning it with purified or distilled water and gently wiping it with a soft cloth is the best cleaning method. Remember, do not rinse directly with tap water, as the chlorine and other impurities in tap water can also affect Bi-Yu.

  • Fears Bumps, Likes Handling: Although Bi-Yu is hard, it is ultimately a stone. If it collides with hard objects, minor impacts can cause scratches, while severe impacts can lead to cracks. I've seen a valuable Bi-Yu ornament accidentally fall from a table and break into several pieces; it was truly heartbreaking to witness. So, be careful when wearing it, avoiding contact with hard objects. When storing it, it's best to place it separately in a brocade box wrapped in soft cloth. And 'handling' (盘玩, pānwán) is the essence of Bi-Yu maintenance. The oils and sweat secreted by the human body, through long-term friction and penetration, can moisturize the jade, making it more warm and lustrous. However, handling also requires proper methods: use clean hands, rub gently, and avoid scratching with fingernails. After handling for a period, wipe it clean with a soft cloth and let it 'rest.' This is called 'people nourish jade, jade nourishes people.'

Precautions:

* Avoid Grease: While Bi-Yu likes oiliness, the 'oil' here refers to the natural oils secreted by the human body, not cooking oil or other industrial oils. Cooking oil can easily penetrate the jade, causing it to yellow and become difficult to remove. Therefore, it's best to remove Bi-Yu when cooking in the kitchen.
* Regular Inspection: Frequently check your Bi-Yu for cracks, bumps, or changes in luster. If you find any problems, take action promptly. For example, if you notice the luster has dimmed, you can try cleaning it with water and then repeatedly wiping it with a clean soft cloth.
* Professional Maintenance: If your Bi-Yu has severe damage or requires deep cleaning, it is recommended to seek help from professional jade maintenance institutions. Do not attempt to handle it yourself, to avoid secondary damage.

Summary of Experience:
Ultimately, Bi-Yu maintenance boils down to 'carefulness.' It's not just an ordinary piece of jewelry; it has life and spirituality. If you treat it well, it will naturally reward you with its warm luster and beautiful symbolism. All my experiences have been accumulated through repeated practice. I hope everyone can treat their Bi-Yu well, allowing them to become more radiant and cherished heirlooms as time passes. Remember, handling jade is like cultivating your heart; a calm heart makes the jade moist. May all your Bi-Yu become more beautiful with your care!
