Canadian Bi Yu Jade has a fine texture and good oiliness, but its color is usually more uniform, rarely showing the rich spinach green of Russian material. It has relatively fewer black spots but may have some 'water lines' or 'tendons'. Personally, I find Canadian Bi Yu Jade to have a fresh beauty, very suitable for simple designs.


  • Xinjiang Hetian Bi Yu Jade: This is the true 'King of Bi Yu Jade'! It specifically refers to Bi Yu Jade produced in the Hetian area of Xinjiang. Its characteristics include extremely fine and oily texture, compact structure, and a deep, restrained color, mostly spinach green, with relatively few and evenly distributed black spots. However, pure Xinjiang Hetian Bi Yu Jade is very rare on the market now, and its price is sky-high. If you see a piece advertised as Xinjiang Hetian Bi Yu Jade but with a very affordable price, it's most likely 'fake' or mislabeled! 🤫


  • Qinghai Bi Yu Jade: Less abundant, with a greener hue, relatively looser texture, and less oiliness than the previous three. It's not common on the market, just good to know.

  • Look at the Purity: Mainly check for black spots, fissures, cotton-like inclusions, and other flaws. Black spots are associated minerals in Bi Yu Jade; a moderate amount can prove its natural origin, but too many will affect its aesthetics and value. Fissures and cotton-like inclusions should be avoided as much as possible. For example, in Russian Bi Yu Jade, if the black spots are evenly distributed and don't detract from the overall appearance, it can still be acceptable.


  • Look at the Carving: The craftsmanship is also part of the value. Good carving can give Bi Yu Jade new life and enhance its artistic value. Especially those '巧雕' (clever carving) pieces are rare and highly sought after.
