Hello, fellow jade enthusiasts! I'm Old Zhang, and I've been involved in jade appraisal and collection for over thirty years. Throughout these years, I've handled countless exquisite jade pieces and witnessed many treasures lose their luster due to improper care, which is truly regrettable. Today, I want to talk to you about my beloved nephrite jade and the practical techniques to keep its brilliance eternal.

Scene Introduction:

I remember when I first started, an old senior gave me a superb spinach-green nephrite hand-held piece, instructing me to play with it carefully and nurture it diligently. At that time, I was young and ambitious, thinking it was just a stone, how delicate could it be? As a result, not long after, that nephrite became somewhat dry and lost its initial warmth. The old senior just smiled, saying nothing, but it made me deeply realize that jade has a life of its own and needs to be cared for like an old friend. Since then, I began to delve into the art of jade maintenance, especially for nephrite.

Core Techniques:

Nephrite maintenance, though not complicated, requires persistence and meticulousness. I've summarized the following points, hoping they can help everyone:

  • “Playing” is the best maintenance: Nephrite fears dryness the most, and the oils and sweat secreted by the human body happen to be natural moisturizers. My experience is to insist on playing with nephrite daily with clean hands, allowing it to fully contact the skin. Note that “playing” here is not violent rubbing, but gentle caressing and fondling. Especially in summer, when the body sweats more, it's a good time for nephrite to “absorb” oil. My spinach-green nephrite, after years of my playing, is now as warm and smooth as grease, with a subtle luster, more charming than when I first acquired it.

  • Avoid contact with chemicals: This is the most important point! Chemical substances such as perfumes, detergents, soaps, and cosmetics are highly corrosive to nephrite. They will erode the surface of the jade, causing it to lose its luster and even produce a “white flower” phenomenon. My habit is to always remove nephrite jewelry and store it properly before washing hands, showering, doing housework, or using cosmetics. Once, a friend of mine wore a nephrite bracelet while washing dishes, and a small white spot appeared on the edge of the bracelet, which was heartbreaking.

  • Regular cleaning and hydration: Although nephrite loves oil, it cannot be dirty. If not cleaned for a long time, dust and dirt will clog the pores of the jade, affecting its translucency and warmth. I recommend periodically using a soft brush dipped in clean water (preferably distilled or purified water) to gently brush the surface of the nephrite, then wipe it dry with a clean, soft cotton cloth. After drying, you can apply one or two drops of baby oil or colorless, odorless olive oil with a cotton cloth, spread it evenly, and then wipe off the excess oil with a clean cotton cloth, allowing the nephrite to absorb naturally. This is like moisturizing the skin and can effectively prevent nephrite from drying and cracking.

  • Avoid collision and high temperatures: Although nephrite has a high hardness, it is still afraid of falling and bumping. Violent collisions can cause nephrite to crack or produce hidden lines. At the same time, high temperatures can also damage nephrite, changing its internal structure and making it dry and dull. Therefore, avoid exposing nephrite to direct sunlight for long periods or near heat sources such as stoves and radiators. In my collection room, nephrite is stored in a constant temperature and humidity cabinet, away from direct sunlight.

Precautions:

* Never scratch with hard objects: Even if there are stubborn stains on the surface of nephrite, never use a steel brush or hard objects to scratch it, as this will leave irreparable scratches.
* Avoid mixing with harder gemstones: Nephrite should be stored separately or wrapped in a soft cloth to avoid friction with harder gemstones such as diamonds, rubies, and sapphires, which can cause damage.
* Regular inspection: Frequently check nephrite jewelry for looseness, wear, or cracks, and repair them in time.

Experience Summary:

Jade has spirit, and nephrite even more so. Its warmth and luster are gifts from the passage of time and the result of our careful nurturing. My experience tells me that treating nephrite is like treating an old friend, requiring patience, meticulousness, and perseverance. Day after day of playing, year after year of nurturing, you will find that the nephrite in your hand will become more spiritual and vibrant. The warm luster emanating from within is incomparable to any artificial polishing. Remember, the best maintenance is to let it accompany you, feel your body temperature, and absorb your breath. May everyone's nephrite remain brilliant forever and be passed down through generations!
