Hello, fellow jade enthusiasts! I'm Old Zhang, a jade collector for thirty years. From my initial naive entry into the world of jade to my current deep appreciation for its warm and understated beauty, especially for jadeite, that profound green always brings a sense of tranquility. Today, I'm going to share all the jadeite care tips I've accumulated over the years, hoping to help your beloved jade pieces stay vibrant forever.

Scenario Introduction:
I remember when I first started collecting jadeite, that old pit spinach green bangle. When I first got it, it was as warm and lustrous as grease, with a subtle glow. But not long after, due to my lack of knowledge about care, the bangle became somewhat dry and its luster greatly diminished. It broke my heart at the time, so I quickly sought advice from experts and gradually figured out an effective set of care methods. Looking back, that experience truly benefited me and made me deeply realize that jade collection is one-third about discernment and seven-thirds about care.

Core Techniques: The Daily Care of Jadeite

  • "Playing" with Jade, Man and Jade in Harmony: This is the most crucial aspect of jadeite care. "Playing" refers to the process of forming a patina on the jade's surface through human skin oils and sweat, as well as prolonged friction. Jadeite particularly enjoys being played with; its structure is relatively dense, and after playing, it's more likely to display a warm, precious luster. My experience is that daily wear is the best way to play with jade. If you can't wear it for long periods, you can also set aside 10-20 minutes each day to gently wipe it with a clean cotton cloth or soft brush, then caress it with your hands, allowing the jade to fully interact with your body. Remember, playing with jade should be done calmly, avoiding impatience, and never playing with oily hands, as that will only be counterproductive.

  • Proper Cleaning, Away from Chemicals: Cleaning jadeite is simple but particular. If it gets dusty or stained during daily wear, you can rinse it with clean water and then dry it with a soft cotton cloth. Absolutely avoid using any chemical cleaning agents, such as soap, dish soap, shower gel, etc. These chemical components can corrode the jade's surface and cause it to lose its luster. I once had a friend who, in an attempt to make her jadeite bangle shinier, actually brushed it with toothpaste, resulting in a whitened surface, which she deeply regretted.

  • Avoid High Temperatures and Sun Exposure: Although jadeite has high hardness, it is essentially a mineral. Prolonged exposure to high temperatures or direct sunlight can cause changes in its internal structure, leading to dehydration, dryness, and even cracks. Therefore, when driving in the summer, do not place jadeite jewelry on the dashboard for sun exposure; it's also best to remove it when soaking in hot springs or taking a sauna. My practice is that if I don't wear it for a long time, I place the jadeite in a cool, dry brocade box, wrapped in soft silk to prevent bumps and direct sunlight.

  • Regular "Hydration": This "hydration" doesn't actually mean using water, but rather keeping the jadeite at a certain humidity. In the dry winters of the north, I sometimes soak jadeite in purified water for one to two hours, then take it out, dry it, and play with it by hand. This helps the jadeite maintain its internal moisture, making it more lustrous. However, be careful not to soak it for too long, and always use purified water to avoid the chlorine in tap water affecting the jade.

Precautions:
* Avoid Bumps: Although jadeite has high hardness, its toughness is relatively poor, making it prone to cracks when impacted. Wear it carefully to avoid bumping against hard objects. One of my old pieces, due to an accidental fall from a table, didn't shatter but developed internal hidden cracks, which pained me deeply.
* Keep Away from Fumes: Kitchen fumes can subtly damage jadeite. Fumes will adhere to the jade's surface, forming a difficult-to-remove greasy film that affects its luster. Therefore, it's best to remove jadeite jewelry when cooking.
* Avoid Perfumes and Cosmetics: Perfumes, hairsprays, cosmetics, etc., all contain chemical components that, with long-term contact, can corrode the jadeite's surface and cause it to lose its original luster.

Experience Summary:
Caring for jade is like caring for a person; it requires patience and meticulousness. Jadeite care is not an overnight process; it's a long-term accumulation. Every time you play with it, every time you clean it, you are engaging in a silent dialogue with the jade. Through proper care, your jadeite will become increasingly warm, increasingly spiritual, eventually displaying a luster and charm unique to you. Remember, the best care is frequent wearing and diligent nurturing, allowing your beloved jade to become a part of your life, growing with you and shining with you. I hope my experiences are helpful to everyone, and I wish all your jadeite pieces will be radiant and passed down through generations!
