Bi Yu: More Than Just Hetian Bi Yu! 🌍

First, let's correct a common misconception: Bi Yu is not synonymous with Hetian Bi Yu. Hetian Jade is a broad concept, and Bi Yu is just one of its varieties. Bi Yu itself is further subdivided into numerous 'sub-families' based on origin, structure, color, and other factors.

1. Xinjiang Hetian Bi Yu: The 'Top Tier' of Collectors' Items 👑

When it comes to Bi Yu, Xinjiang Hetian Bi Yu is definitely unavoidable. Its characteristics include excellent oiliness, a warm and moist feel, and a fine structure, often with black spots (chromite). Among Russian Bi Yu, 'old mine material' and 'duck-egg green' are quite popular, especially duck-egg green, with its subtle grayish-green hue, which has recently attracted many young collectors. I once encountered a Russian Bi Yu bracelet with a typical apple-green color, very beautiful, but upon closer inspection, I could still see a hint of fibrous structure internally, which is a clear distinction from Hetian Bi Yu. The density and hardness of Russian Bi Yu are similar to Hetian Bi Yu, but it feels slightly 'dry' to the touch.

3. Canadian Bi Yu: The Value-for-Money Choice 💰

Canadian Bi Yu usually has a darker color, mostly dark green, even approaching black. Its characteristics include large size, high output, and relatively affordable prices. However, its drawbacks are low transparency, average oiliness, and a tendency to have 'water lines' and 'stone veins'. Nevertheless, if you can find Canadian Bi Yu with uniform color and fine texture, it's an excellent choice for large ornaments or carvings. A friend of mine used a large piece of Canadian Bi Yu to carve a Buddha statue; although not as warm and moist as Hetian Bi Yu, its stable and heavy feel has a unique charm.

4. Qinghai Bi Yu: Emerging Force, Potential Stock 📈

Qinghai Bi Yu is a new variety that has only recently entered the market. Its colors are mostly light green or grayish-green, with higher transparency, but lacking in oiliness, often accompanied by 'water lines'. Currently, its market recognition is still increasing, and prices are relatively low, but its future potential should not be underestimated. I personally hold a wait-and-see attitude towards Qinghai Bi Yu; although some materials have beautiful colors, the overall texture and maturity still need time to develop.

How to Instantly Identify Top-Tier 'Spinach Green'? 🔍

After discussing so many varieties, what everyone cares about most is how to choose a good piece of Bi Yu, especially that alluring 'spinach green'!

  • Look at the color: True 'spinach green' is a rich, deep, and uniform green, like fresh spinach leaves, without杂色 or color difference. Remember, it's 'true green', not yellowish or bluish.

  • Look at the oiliness: This is the soul of Bi Yu! Good Bi Yu will feel 'sticky' and 'oily' to the touch, with a waxy or greasy luster, not a glassy luster. You can gently rub it with your finger to feel its warmth.

  • Look at the structure: Use a strong flashlight to observe the internal structure. Top-tier Bi Yu has a very fine structure, with almost no granular feel, presenting an interwoven or felt-like structure. If you see obvious 'radish patterns' or fibrous structures, it's likely Russian Bi Yu.

  • Look at black spots: Xinjiang Hetian Bi Yu will more or less have some black spots (chromite), but the fewer and less obvious, the better. If there are too many black spots, or they are unevenly distributed, it will affect the aesthetics and value. Russian Bi Yu and Canadian Bi Yu, on the other hand, have relatively fewer or no black spots.

  • Look at flaws: Cracks, stone veins, water lines, stiffness, etc., are all flaws that will greatly reduce the value of Bi Yu. Try to avoid them when choosing.


My Personal Experience Sharing 💡

When I first started collecting Bi Yu, I also paid a lot of 'tuition fees'. Once, I saw a 'spinach green' bracelet in an antique market; its color was astonishingly rich, and the price was unbelievably cheap. At the time, I thought I had found a treasure, but it turned out to be dyed quartz when I had it appraised! So, when buying jade, you must keep your eyes open, observe, learn, and ask more questions, and don't be greedy for small advantages.
