Hey sisters! 👋 I'm your old friend in the jadeite world, having spent over a decade immersed in it. Today, I want to talk about one of the most crucial and often confusing concepts in jadeite bracelets: 'Zhongshui' (种水), which refers to the 'texture' and 'transparency' of the jadeite. They say 'outsiders look at color, insiders look at texture,' and it's absolutely true! 💎

What are 'Zhong' (种) and 'Shui' (水) in Jadeite?

Simply put, 'Zhong' refers to the fineness of the jadeite's texture, meaning the size of its crystal grains and how tightly packed they are. The finer the grains and the tighter their arrangement, the 'older' and better the 'Zhong' of the jadeite. 'Shui,' on the other hand, refers to the jadeite's transparency and luster, or its ability to allow light to pass through. The more 'Shui' it has, the more transparent and ethereal the jadeite appears.

Do you know the common grades of Jadeite 'Zhongshui'?

  • Glassy Jadeite (玻璃种): 🤩 The ultimate premium! Its crystal structure is incredibly fine, almost invisible to the naked eye, with extremely high transparency, as clear and bright as glass. Light passes through unimpeded, giving it a pure and flawless feel. I once handled a glassy jadeite bracelet that was so icy and luminous, it felt like a clear spring flowing within it. That beauty is truly unforgettable, easily fetching over a million yuan in the market. 💰

  • Icy Jadeite (冰种): 🧊 Second only to glassy jadeite, its transparency is also excellent but slightly less than glassy. Its crystal grains are slightly larger than glassy, but still difficult to discern with the naked eye. Icy jadeite looks like ice, cool and transparent, giving a strong 'icy' sensation. Many high-quality colorless or floral-patterned jadeite bracelets belong to the icy grade, exuding an ethereal charm when worn.

  • Waxy-Icy Jadeite (糯冰种): 🍚 This grade falls between icy and waxy, combining characteristics of both. It has the clarity of icy jadeite but also the warmth of waxy jadeite. The crystal grains are slightly coarser than icy, but still relatively fine, with transparency ranging from translucent to semi-translucent. Waxy-icy jadeite bracelets are very popular in the market, offering great value for money, with good texture and relatively affordable prices.

  • Waxy Jadeite (糯种): 🌾 Waxy jadeite has a more noticeable but still fine crystal grain. Its transparency ranges from semi-translucent to opaque, looking like cooked glutinous rice soup—warm and textured. Waxy jadeite is the most common grade for jadeite bracelets and a popular choice for many beginners. While not as transparent as glassy or icy jadeite, good waxy jadeite is still warm and lovely, making it very elegant to wear.

  • Bean Jadeite (豆种): 🌱 Bean jadeite has large crystal grains, visible to the naked eye, resembling small beans arranged together. Its transparency is low, mostly opaque. Bean jadeite is the lowest grade of jadeite, but if it has good color and exquisite carving, it can still possess unique charm. However, for bracelets, the value of bean jadeite is relatively low.

Expert Tips: How to Instantly Identify 'Zhongshui'?

Observe the Luster: Good 'Zhongshui' will have a very strong, glass-like luster. Poor 'Zhongshui' will appear dull, even somewhat waxy.
Check Transparency: Hold the bracelet against a light source and observe how much light passes through. The more transparent, the better the 'Shui.' Glassy and icy jadeite are almost completely transparent, waxy-icy is semi-translucent, waxy is slightly translucent to opaque, and bean jadeite is almost opaque.
Look for Fluorescence and Gelling: Glassy and high-grade icy jadeite will exhibit a phenomenon called 'fluorescence' or 'gelling' under light. Fluorescence refers to the refraction of light by the internal crystal structure of the jadeite, creating a hazy fluorescent effect; gelling refers to the jadeite appearing like solidified glue, oily and resilient. These are signs of excellent 'Zhongshui'!
Examine Crystal Grains: Use a 10x magnifying glass, or observe carefully under natural light. The smaller and less noticeable the crystal grains, the older and better the 'Zhong.' If you can clearly see the graininess, it's likely waxy or bean jadeite.

My Little Advice:

When choosing a jadeite bracelet, 'Zhongshui' is paramount! It's better to choose a colorless bracelet with good 'Zhongshui' than a brightly colored one with poor 'Zhongshui.' This is because 'Zhongshui' determines the jadeite's vitality and potential value. Beginners can start with waxy-icy or high-grade waxy jadeite, which offer good value for money and excellent wearing effects. Remember, observe, touch, and compare more to develop your 'eagle eyes'! 👀
