Hello fellow collectors! I'm Old Zhang, and I've been playing with jade for about thirty years. Over these years, I've handled countless jadeite pieces, from small pendants worth dozens of yuan to heirlooms worth millions, all meticulously cared for by my experienced hands. Today, I'd like to share with you how I've nurtured these cold stones into warm, lustrous pieces, as if they've come to life.

Scenario Introduction:

I remember when I first started, I didn't know the rules. A beloved old-mine glass-type bangle, due to excessive sweating in the summer and not being wiped promptly, felt somewhat 'dry' and its luster dimmed after prolonged wear. At that time, I was so anxious, fearing I had ruined the treasure. Later, I consulted an old master and realized that jade also needs to 'breathe' and be 'nourished'. Since then, I've developed my own set of jadeite maintenance tips, which I'll share with you today without reservation.

Core Techniques:

  • 'Cleanliness' is Fundamental, Gentle Cleaning is Key: Jadeite is most afraid of dirt and grime, especially oil and dust. My method is to rinse it with clean water (preferably purified water or cooled boiled water) at least once a week. Remember, the water temperature should not be too high, room temperature is fine. When rinsing, you can use a soft-bristled brush (like a baby toothbrush) to gently scrub the crevices to remove accumulated dust. Never use chemical cleaners like soap or laundry detergent, as they can corrode the jadeite surface and cause it to lose its luster. After cleaning, dry it with a clean, soft cotton cloth (a spectacle cloth also works) to ensure no water stains remain.

  • 'Playing' is the Essence, People Nourish Jade, Jade Nourishes People: Jadeite is all about 'playing' or 'nurturing'. This 'playing' isn't just random touching; it has its specifics. I usually start playing with it after washing my hands, when my skin is dry and free of sweat and grease. Gently caress the jadeite surface with clean fingers, feeling its warmth. The oils and perspiration secreted by the human body (when healthy) have a nourishing effect on jadeite, helping to form a thin patina on its surface, increasing its luster and oiliness. But remember, when you're sweating a lot or your hands are greasy, avoid direct playing, as it might have the opposite effect. I have a habit of taking out my bangle every evening while watching TV and gently rotating it in my hand for a while, which both relaxes me and maintains my treasure.

  • 'Storage' has its Secrets: Avoid Light, Heat, and Bumps: The storage of jadeite is also very important. When not wearing it, I usually wrap it individually in a soft silk or velvet cloth and store it in a jewelry box. The jewelry box should preferably be wooden, with a soft lining to provide cushioning. The storage environment should avoid direct sunlight and high temperatures. Sunlight can cause changes in the molecular structure of jadeite, leading to fading or even yellowing of its color. Places like kitchens, with heavy oil fumes and high temperatures, are absolute no-gos. Also, avoid mixing it with other hard objects to prevent bumps and damage. I once had an old-mine peace buckle that got a fine scratch on its surface because I accidentally put it with my keys; it broke my heart for a long time.

Precautions:

* Avoid contact with strong acids and alkalis: Any chemical reagents, including perfumes, cosmetics, detergents, etc., can cause irreversible damage to jadeite. Try to avoid contact when wearing it.
* Regularly check strings/cords: For pendants, bracelets, and other jadeite pieces with strings or cords, regularly check if the cords are worn and replace them promptly to prevent them from falling off and breaking.
* Avoid high-temperature baking: Jadeite contains a certain amount of moisture internally, and high-temperature baking can lead to moisture loss, making it dry and losing its luster.
* Keep away from oil fumes: Kitchen oil fumes can cause significant damage to jadeite, covering its surface with a layer of grease that is difficult to clean and affects its appearance.

Experience Summary:

The maintenance of jadeite is actually like raising a child; it requires patience, meticulousness, and perseverance. It's not an overnight process but a cumulative one. A well-maintained jadeite not only retains its original beauty but also becomes more warm and spiritual over time. My heirlooms, after decades of meticulous care, now shine brighter than ever, as if silently narrating the passage of time. Remember, three years of people nourishing jade, and jade nourishes people for a lifetime. Take good care of your jadeite, and it will surely repay you with unexpected surprises and blessings.

I hope my experiences are helpful to everyone. I wish all fellow collectors can nurture their beloved beautiful jade!
