Hello, fellow jade enthusiasts! I'm your old friend, Wang, a passionate jade collector! 👋 Today, let's dive deep into the 'soul' of jadeite bracelets – 'Zhongshui'! This is one of the key factors determining jadeite's value, and also where many beginners often stumble. Don't worry, today I'll personally teach you how to spot good 'Zhongshui' at a glance, enabling you to identify precious pieces in the vast sea of jade! ✨
What are 'Zhong' and 'Shui' in Jadeite?
Many friends find 'Zhongshui' mysterious, but it's not that complicated. Simply put:
'Zhong' (Texture): Refers to the fineness of jadeite crystal grains and their compactness. The finer the grains and the tighter the bonding, the more delicate and tough the jadeite's texture, known as 'laozhong' (old texture) in the trade. Conversely, coarse grains and loose structures indicate 'nenzhong' (young texture).
'Shui' (Water/Transparency): Refers to the transparency of jadeite, i.e., the degree to which light penetrates it. The higher the transparency and the stronger the light perception, the more lustrous and vibrant the jadeite appears, known as 'shuitouzu' (sufficient water head) in the trade.
They complement each other and are indispensable. Good jadeite must have 'laozhong shuizu' (old texture and sufficient water head)!
Grading Jadeite 'Zhongshui' (Old Wang's Exclusive Experience Sharing! 📈)
Common 'Zhongshui' grades on the market, from high to low, can be roughly divided into the following categories:
- Glass Jadeite (Boli Zhong): 💎 The ultimate grade of jadeite! The texture is extremely fine, crystal grains are almost invisible to the naked eye, and transparency is extremely high, clear and translucent like glass. Light penetrates completely, giving a pure and immaculate feeling. The glass jadeite bangle I collected almost melts one's heart in the sunlight! 😍 The market price... often seven figures, or even higher, rare and hard to come by!
- Ice Jadeite (Bing Zhong): 🧊 Second only to glass jadeite, the texture is also very fine, and transparency is high, but slightly inferior to glass jadeite, feeling a bit like ice, clear but slightly hazy. Ice jadeite bangles have good 'shuitou' and are full of spiritual energy, a favorite among many senior jade enthusiasts. I personally think ice jadeite is a very cost-effective choice, having both collection value and high-end wearability. A few years ago, I bought an ice jadeite bangle with floating flowers for a low six-figure sum, and its value has now multiplied several times! 😎
- Glutinous Jadeite (Nuo Zhong): 🍚 Compared to ice jadeite, the crystal grains of glutinous jadeite are slightly stronger, and transparency is also slightly lower, looking like cooked glutinous rice soup, semi-transparent to slightly transparent. Glutinous jadeite is further divided into glutinous-ice jadeite (close to ice jadeite), fine glutinous jadeite, and glutinous-melted jadeite. Glutinous jadeite bangles are the most common on the market and have the highest public acceptance. I often advise novice friends to start with glutinous jadeite, as the price is moderate and there are many choices.
- Bean Jadeite (Dou Zhong): 🌱 This is the most basic grade of jadeite 'Zhongshui'. Crystal grains are coarse and visible to the naked eye, arranged like beans, with very low transparency, almost opaque. Although bean jadeite bangles are affordable, their aesthetic appeal and collection value are relatively low. If your budget is limited and you want to experience jadeite, you can consider it. But Old Wang suggests that if conditions permit, try to choose above glutinous jadeite.
Old Wang Teaches You How to Quickly Judge 'Zhongshui'! 👀
- Observe the Luster: Good 'Zhongshui' has a strong surface luster, exhibiting a glassy sheen. Poor 'Zhongshui' has a weak luster, even a waxy sheen.
- Observe Transparency: Hold the jadeite bangle against the light and observe the degree of light penetration. Glass jadeite and ice jadeite allow you to clearly see your fingers or the background, glutinous jadeite will be blurry, and bean jadeite will be almost opaque.
- Observe Crystal Structure: Carefully examine the inside of the jadeite. Good 'Zhongshui' has fine crystal grains, difficult to discern with the naked eye; poor 'Zhongshui' has coarse crystal grains, and you can even see 'fly wings' structures (referring to cleavage plane reflections).
- Feel it in Hand: Good jadeite bangles feel cool and smooth to the touch, and are relatively heavy (high density).
Old Wang's Little Tips 💡:
* Don't just look at pictures! The 'Zhongshui' of jadeite varies greatly under different lighting conditions, so you must see the actual item in person! It's best to observe it under natural light.
* Look more, compare more! Without comparison, there's no harm. The more good jadeite you see, the better your eye will become.
* Find a reliable dealer! This is crucial! Professional dealers will give you professional advice, preventing you from buying something not worth its price.
* Budget determines height! Within your budget, choosing the one with the best 'Zhongshui' is always the right choice.
Alright, that's all for today's 'Zhongshui' class! I hope my sharing helps everyone better understand jadeite and find their beloved treasures!
