Hello, fellow jade enthusiasts! I'm Old Wang, and I've been playing with jade for decades, having seen and handled many fine pieces. Today, let's not talk about identification, but rather about the 'nurturing' of jadeite. They say jade nourishes people, and people must also nourish jade; this statement is absolutely true. A good piece of jadeite not only requires careful selection but also an understanding of how to keep it radiant and pass it down through generations.

Scene Introduction:
I remember when I first started, I was young and headstrong, thinking that once I bought jadeite, I could just wear it without any special care. One time, I casually placed an exquisite old-mine glass-type jadeite bangle by the kitchen sink. A few days later, the bangle's surface was covered with a greasy film, and its luster had significantly dulled. My heart ached so much at the time that I quickly sought advice from an expert. That lesson made me thoroughly understand the importance of jadeite maintenance and initiated my deep exploration into the 'art of jadeite care'.

Core Techniques: The 'Five Don'ts and Three Dos' of Jadeite Care

Five Don'ts (Avoid pitfalls, prevent problems):

  • Avoid high temperatures and sun exposure: Jadeite's structure is very stable, but prolonged exposure to strong sunlight or proximity to high heat sources (such as heaters, stoves) can cause its internal moisture to evaporate, making its structure loose, and even leading to 'dehydration,' which can lighten its color and reduce its luster. My experience is, never leave jadeite jewelry in a car under direct sunlight in summer; the temperature can cook a person, let alone jade.

  • Avoid chemical corrosion: Various chemicals, such as acids, alkalis, perfumes, detergents, cosmetics, etc., can corrode the surface of jadeite, causing it to lose its luster and even develop pits. A friend of mine always wore her jadeite ring while washing dishes, and as a result, the gold inlay on the ring oxidized and turned black, and the jadeite surface also lost its oily sheen. Therefore, it's best to remove jadeite when doing housework, showering, or applying makeup.

  • Avoid collisions and drops: Although jadeite has high hardness, its toughness is relatively poor, making it prone to cracks or even breakage upon impact. I once witnessed a priceless jadeite pendant shatter into several pieces because its owner accidentally dropped it from a height; it was such a pity. So, be extra careful when wearing it and avoid strenuous activities.

  • Avoid oil stains and dust: The surface of jadeite easily absorbs oil stains and dust, which over time can form a stubborn layer of grime, affecting its transparency and luster. Try not to wear jadeite in places with heavy oil fumes and dust, such as kitchens or construction sites.

  • Avoid dryness and lack of moisture: Jadeite contains a certain amount of moisture internally, and prolonged exposure to dry environments can cause it to 'dehydrate,' becoming dry and dull. This is especially true in heated rooms during northern winters; you can appropriately soak it in purified water or wipe it with a damp soft cloth.

Three Dos (Daily care, moisturizing and nourishing):
  • Wear it frequently: The essence of 'people nourish jade, jade nourishes people' lies here. The oils and sweat secreted by human skin will penetrate into the jadeite through its pores, making it more lustrous and translucent. This is what's called 'playing with jade.' I have several old pieces that have been worn for years, and now their luster is so warm and moist it feels like they could melt. However, remember to clean them regularly after wearing.

  • Clean it regularly: This is the most basic and important maintenance. Use a clean, soft cloth (preferably cotton or deerskin) dampened with a small amount of purified water to gently wipe the surface of the jadeite, removing dust and dirt. If the dirt is heavy, you can dilute a neutral detergent (like baby shampoo) and gently brush it with a soft brush, then rinse with clean water and dry with a soft cloth. Absolutely do not use ultrasonic cleaners, as they can damage the internal structure of jadeite.

  • Store it properly: When not wearing it, jadeite should be stored separately in a soft cloth bag or jewelry box to avoid friction and collision with other hard objects. The storage environment should be kept moderately humid, avoiding excessive dryness or dampness. I usually wrap some precious jadeite pieces that I don't wear often in soft cloth and place them in a dedicated wooden jewelry box, often with a small cup of water inside to maintain humidity.

Important Notes:
* Avoid frequent cleaning: While regular cleaning is important, too frequent use of detergents can accelerate the loss of jadeite's surface luster. In general, wiping with a soft cloth is sufficient; deep cleaning should be done monthly or even less frequently.
* Observe the state of your jadeite: Regularly observe your jadeite. If you notice its luster dimming, color fading, or the appearance of tiny cracks, take timely action or consult a professional.
* Maintenance of inlaid jadeite: For inlaid jadeite, in addition to following the above principles, pay special attention to the maintenance of the metal parts, avoiding contact with chemicals that can cause oxidation. At the same time, regularly check if the inlay is secure to prevent the jadeite from falling out.

Experience Summary:
Jadeite has a life of its own; it needs our meticulous care. Just like caring for your own child, a little more care will reward you with warmth and brilliance. My experience tells me that good maintenance habits can not only keep your jadeite looking new but also allow it to exude a more captivating charm as it ages. Remember, the value of jadeite, in addition to its inherent quality, lies more in the traces of time it carries and the owner's devotion. I hope these small tips of mine can help everyone better care for their precious jadeite!
