Hello fellow collectors! I'm Old Zhang, a restorer who has spent half my life working with jade. Over the years, I've seen countless exquisite jade pieces and restored many broken treasures. During the restoration process, I deeply feel that every piece of jade has its unique life trajectory and story. So, today I want to talk to you about a seemingly insignificant but crucial aspect – the 'collection record' and 'storage and display' of jade.
Scenario Introduction:
I remember when I first started, I acquired an old pit jadeite. At that time, I was driven by pure enthusiasm, thinking its beauty was enough. Later, as time passed, the origin, specific dimensions, and even the details of its acquisition became blurred. It wasn't until a knowledgeable friend asked about it that I realized how little I knew about it. From then on, I decided to create a detailed 'archive' for each of my jade pieces, so that their stories could be completely passed down.
Core Techniques: The Art and Science of Collection Recording
- Establish Exclusive Archive Cards: This is the absolute basic. I recommend creating a physical or electronic archive card for each piece of jade. The content should at least include:
* Acquisition Date and Location: Record when and where you obtained it; this is the beginning of a story itself.
* Source and Channel: Was it purchased from an auction house, antique market, or transferred by a friend? This helps trace its history.
* Material and Origin: Hetian jade, jadeite, Xiuyan jade? Is the origin Xinjiang, Myanmar, or Liaoning? These are core pieces of information.
* Dimensions and Weight: Precise to millimeters and grams, measured with calipers and an electronic scale. For example: length 52mm, width 30mm, thickness 8mm, weight 35.6g.
* Feature Description: Describe in detail the jade's color, texture, carving, natural coloration, flaws, etc. For example: 'Mutton fat white jade, excellent oiliness, local yellow skin, small natural cotton spots on the back, not affecting overall aesthetics.'
* Photo Record: Be sure to take high-definition photos from multiple angles, including front, back, side, close-ups, and size comparison photos with a reference object. Lighting should be ample, and the background simple.
* Appraisal Certificate (if any): Scan or photograph and archive, and record the certificate number and appraisal institution.
* Maintenance Record: When it was cleaned, oiled, stored, etc., this is crucial for long-term observation of changes in the jade.
- Digital Management: While paper archives are good, digital is more convenient. I personally use Excel spreadsheets for management, with each row representing a piece of jade and each column representing an information field. At the same time, I create a folder, named after the jade, containing all related photos and scanned documents. This makes searching and sharing very efficient.
- Integration of Stories and Emotions: Beyond cold data, don't forget to record the story between you and this piece of jade. Why did it attract you? What special meaning does it hold? These emotional records will give your collection more warmth and life.
The Wisdom of Storage and Display
- Individual Storage: Although jade is hard, it is still susceptible to bumps. Each piece of jade should ideally be stored separately in a velvet bag, brocade box, or display cabinet with soft padding, to avoid friction and scratches with other hard objects.
- Constant Temperature and Humidity: The ideal storage environment is a temperature between 20-25℃ and humidity between 50-60%. Avoid direct sunlight and sudden changes in temperature, as these can cause microscopic changes in the internal structure of the jade, or even cracking.
- Regular 'Playing' and Inspection: Jade needs to 'breathe.' Regularly take it out to handle; this not only allows the jade to absorb human oils, making it more lustrous, but also provides a good opportunity to check its condition. After each handling, wipe it clean with a soft cloth before returning it to its original place.
- The Art of Display: If conditions permit, you can purchase professional display cabinets, lined with silk or velvet, and equipped with soft lighting. The lighting should not be too strong, to avoid long-term exposure affecting the jade. When displaying, you can classify them by theme, era, or color to create thematic displays, which are both beautiful and easy to appreciate.
Precautions:
* Theft Prevention: Valuable jade must be properly secured; consider a safe or professional security measures if necessary.
* Dust Prevention: Dust can affect the luster of jade; regularly clean display cabinets and the surface of the jade.
* Avoid Chemicals: When cleaning jade, never use any chemical cleaning agents; only use clean water and a soft cloth.
Experience Summary:
Collection recording and storage/display are not just about management; they are also about the inheritance and respect for jade culture. Every piece of jade is a gift from nature and a witness to history. Through meticulous recording, we can better understand them; through scientific storage, we can better protect them; through artistic display, we can better appreciate them. I hope my experience can help everyone better guard their jade treasures, so that their brilliance never fades. Remember, the best collection is to let every piece of jade have a complete and wonderful story!
