Hello fellow collectors, I'm Old Wang, and I've been involved in jade appraisal and collection for over thirty years. In these years, I've seen countless exquisite jade pieces and also encountered many 'misjudgments.' But what fascinates me most is not the carving or the material of the jade itself, but the stories it carries. Today, I want to share a personal experience with you and how I assess and collect jade by uncovering these stories.

Setting the Scene: A Neglected Old Jade Plaque

It was in an unassuming small antique shop where I stumbled upon an old jade plaque casually placed in a corner. It didn't look remarkable; it had a thick patina, and the carving wasn't particularly exquisite, with even a few nicks. The shop owner showed little interest in it, and the asking price was low. At the time, my friends advised me not to waste my time, thinking this jade plaque had no collection value. But I was drawn to its weathered, rustic charm, always feeling there was something hidden within it.

Core Technique: The Three-Step Story Excavation

My intuition told me this jade plaque was not simple. So, I decided to delve into its story. I call this method the 'Three-Step Story Excavation':

  • Meticulous Observation, Seeking Clues: I first examined every detail of the jade plaque with a magnifying glass. Although the carving wasn't refined, the lines were fluid, revealing an ancient, unadorned charm. The jade was Hetian jade, but the natural color permeation was even, indicating long-term wear and handling. Most crucially, there were a few faint small characters carved on the back of the plaque, resembling some kind of mark or an abbreviated name. These were the initial clues.

  • Tracing Origins, Bold Hypotheses: I asked the shop owner about the origin of this jade plaque. The owner said an elderly person brought it in for consignment while clearing out old items, and he wasn't clear about its specific history. This made me even more curious. I began to hypothesize boldly: this jade plaque might not be an ordinary ornament; it might carry some special significance, perhaps even related to a family or a historical event. Based on the color permeation and carving style, I initially judged it to be at least from the mid-to-late Qing Dynasty.

  • Multi-faceted Verification, Confirming the Story: Armed with these clues and hypotheses, I began multi-faceted verification. I consulted a large number of Qing Dynasty jade materials, comparing the stylistic characteristics of jade plaques from the same period. I also specifically visited the elderly person who sold the jade plaque. The elderly person was initially reluctant to talk much, but with my sincere communication, she finally opened up. It turned out that this jade plaque was passed down from her great-grandfather, who was a minor but well-known literati in the late Qing Dynasty. The characters carved on the back of the plaque were her great-grandfather's courtesy name, and the pattern carved on the front of the plaque was a traditional motif symbolizing 'blessings and longevity.' The elderly person also mentioned that this jade plaque was her great-grandfather's personal item, accompanying him through many years.

Precautions: Avoiding Over-interpretation and Subjective Conjecture

During the process of story excavation, there are a few points that require special attention:

* Maintain Objectivity: While stories are important, they should not deviate from the jade's material, craftsmanship, and age. Do not blindly inflate the value of an ordinary jade piece because of a moving story.
* Multi-source Verification: Any oral story may have discrepancies and needs to be verified through physical characteristics, documentary evidence, and other aspects to ensure its authenticity.
* Respect History: Even incomplete stories should be treated with respect; do not fabricate or exaggerate for market appeal.

Conclusion: Stories are the Soul of Jade

Ultimately, I acquired this jade plaque at a reasonable price. Although it's not a priceless masterpiece, its value to me far exceeds its market price. Because it carries the memory of a family, the sentiment of a literati, and a flowing passage of time. This jade plaque also became a significant turning point in my collecting career, making me even more convinced that every piece of jade has its own story. And as collectors, our task is not just to possess it, but to discover, understand, and pass on these stories.

By uncovering the stories behind jade, we can not only gain a deeper understanding of its cultural connotations and historical value but also imbue it with unique vitality. This is not only the joy of collecting but also the highest realm I pursue as a jade appraiser. I hope my experience can bring some inspiration to everyone on their collecting journey. Remember, feel with your heart, discover with emotion, and the jade in your hand might just hold an astonishing legend.
