📝 What exactly should we look for in a certificate?

Don't be intimidated by the dense text on the certificate; the key points are just a few! Follow me, and let's break it down step by step:

  • Name and Qualification of the Appraisal Institution: This is paramount! You must choose certificates issued by nationally recognized authoritative appraisal institutions, such as:

* National Gemstone Testing Center (NGTC): This is the most authoritative institution in China, bar none! Their certificates have the highest credibility. ✅
* Gemological Institute of China, China University of Geosciences (GIC): Also a widely recognized authoritative institution in the industry. ✅
* Provincial and municipal quality inspection stations, jewelry testing centers under the Bureau of Geology and Mineral Resources: These are also relatively reliable choices. ✅

❌ Beware of unknown institutions that sound "prestigious" but cannot be verified! Some merchants print their own "certificates" or even forge certificates from well-known institutions. You must keep your eyes peeled!

  • Appraisal Result (Main Content):

* Product Name: For example, "Jadeite A-goods," "Hetian Jade (Nephrite)," "Dushan Jade," etc. This is the jade's "true name"!
* Key point: If it's jadeite, be sure to check if it's "Natural Jadeite A-goods"! Only A-goods are natural jadeite that has not undergone any artificial optimization or treatment. B-goods (resin-filled) and C-goods (dyed) are treated, their value is greatly reduced, and they may even be harmful to health! I once almost bought a B-goods bracelet, luckily a friend reminded me to look at the certificate, which said "Jadeite (treated)," and I quickly returned it! 😱
* Color: Describes the color of the jade, such as "green," "white," "celadon," etc. This is a supplementary reference, as color description is somewhat subjective.
* Luster: Usually "vitreous luster," "greasy luster," etc. Jadeite typically has vitreous luster, while Hetian jade has greasy luster.

  • Photos: The certificate will include actual photos of the jade. Carefully compare whether the photos and the actual item are consistent, including shape, color, texture features, etc. Some unscrupulous merchants use one certificate for multiple items, or the photos do not match the actual item, to pass them off.


  • Certificate Number and Query Method: Almost all legitimate certificates have a unique number and can be queried on the institution's official website. Every time I get a certificate, the first thing I do is go online and enter the number to query and verify that all information matches. If it can't be found or the information doesn't match, then the certificate is fake!

* Request a certificate from the merchant before purchasing: Especially for high-value jade, a certificate is a must! If the merchant is evasive or says, "the certificate is on its way" or "haven't had time to get one," then be vigilant!
* Prioritize merchants with certificates from authoritative institutions: Many brand merchants will proactively provide certificates from NGTC and other institutions, which offers more peace of mind.
* Learn to query certificates yourself: After getting the certificate, query it on the official website immediately! This is the most foolproof step, don't be lazy.
* Don't blindly trust "international certificates": Some merchants will present "international certificates," but the authority and recognition of these certificates in China may be far less than institutions like NGTC. Unless you are very familiar with that international institution, be cautious.
* Certificates are just aids, your own eye for detail is also important: Certificates can guarantee authenticity and material, but the aesthetic appeal, carving, and symbolism of jade still require your own aesthetic judgment and preference.
