Hello fellow collectors! I'm Old Zhang, and I've been playing with jade for thirty years. From my initial ignorance to my current understanding, I've touched countless good jades and fallen into many traps. Today, we won't talk about market trends or authenticity identification. We'll discuss a seemingly simple yet crucial aspect: the maintenance of Hetian jade. In my opinion, a well-maintained Hetian jade not only remains timeless but also showcases its unique warmth and spiritual essence. Its future value will even far exceed those that have been neglected.

Scenario Introduction:

I remember years ago, I acquired a Hetian jade seed material handpiece with excellent quality. Its oily luster and mature skin color were truly captivating. But being young and impetuous, I always thought jade was durable and didn't pay much attention to daily wear and cleaning. What was the result? In less than two years, the luster of the handpiece significantly diminished, and some areas even developed a subtle 'dry' feeling. At that time, I was heartbroken and immediately sought advice from experienced old experts, only then did I understand the secrets of jade maintenance. Since then, I've treated every piece of jade like my own child, meticulously caring for it, and thus witnessed countless pieces of jade becoming more warm and radiant through the baptism of time.

Core Techniques: The 'Three-Character Mantra' for Hetian Jade Maintenance – Clean, Moisturize, Avoid

  • 'Clean': Cleaning is fundamental, gentleness is key.

* Daily Cleaning: Hetian jade is most afraid of erosion by dust and dirt. I usually prepare a soft pure cotton cloth or deerskin and gently wipe the surface of the jade after playing with it every day. Note, it's 'gently wipe,' avoid excessive force to prevent scratching the jade surface. If there are sweat stains or oil stains on the jade surface, you can rinse it with clean water and then wipe it dry with a soft cloth. Remember, do not use any chemical cleaning agents, such as dish soap or soap, as they may corrode the jade surface and destroy its natural oiliness.
* Deep Cleaning (Occasionally): If the jade is worn or stored for a long time, a stubborn layer of dirt may form on the surface. At this time, I will soak the jade in warm water (make sure the water temperature is not too high, just warm to the touch) and gently scrub it with a soft brush (such as a baby toothbrush). After scrubbing, rinse with clean water and then wipe dry with a soft cloth. I usually do this process once or twice a year, not too frequently.

  • 'Moisturize': Playing is nourishment, oil is the medium.

* Human-Jade Harmony: As the saying goes, 'people nourish jade, jade nourishes people.' A large part of this 'nourishment' is reflected in playing with the jade. My experience is to insist on playing with the jade for a period of time every day, allowing the sweat and oil from your hands to naturally penetrate into the jade. But there's a misunderstanding here: not everyone's sweat is suitable for playing with jade. Some people's sweat is acidic, which can actually make the jade dull. Therefore, be sure to wash your hands before playing and keep them clean. During the playing process, feel the warmth of the jade and enjoy the pleasure of human-jade interaction.
* Avoid Excess: While playing is good, it should be done in moderation. Excessive playing for a long time, especially when hands are secreting a lot of oil, may lead to the formation of an 'oil sludge' layer on the jade surface, affecting its translucency and aesthetics. My approach is to wipe it clean with a soft cloth after playing for a while and let the jade 'rest.'

  • 'Avoid': Stay away from harm, protect its true nature.

* Avoid Hard Object Collisions: Although Hetian jade has high hardness, its toughness is relatively poor, and it is very prone to cracks or chips during collisions. Every piece of jade I collect is stored separately to avoid friction and collision with other hard objects. When wearing it, also be careful to avoid strenuous exercise.
* Avoid High Temperature Exposure: High temperatures and prolonged exposure to sunlight can cause changes in the molecular structure inside the jade, leading to dehydration, dryness, and even cracks. My jade is never placed in direct sunlight and never comes into contact with heat sources, such as radiators or stove fires.
* Avoid Chemical Corrosion: As mentioned earlier, chemical substances are the enemy of jade. In addition to cleaning agents, perfumes, cosmetics, acidic and alkaline liquids, etc., can all cause irreversible damage to jade. Therefore, when wearing jade, try to avoid contact with these items.

Real Cases and Experience Summary:

I have a Hetian jade Guanyin pendant that I've treasured for many years. When I first bought it, the jade quality was good, but I always felt it lacked some spiritual essence. I insisted on playing with it every day, meticulously maintaining it, and never letting it suffer any damage. Today, this Guanyin pendant is not only as warm as grease and with a subtle luster, but it also exudes an indescribable precious glow. Once, an old collector saw it and was amazed, saying that this jade had 'come alive' and its value had at least doubled. This made me even more convinced that jade maintenance is not just about extending its lifespan, but also about giving it life and soul.

My advice is:

* Patience is the best maintenance product. The warmth and luster of jade are the result of years of nurturing and sweat; it cannot be rushed.
* Observation is the best teacher. Regularly observe the changes in the jade and understand its 'preferences' to better care for it.
* Respect is the best attitude. Every piece of jade is a gift from nature; treat it with reverence, and it will naturally reward you.

I hope my experience can be helpful to all collectors. Remember, jade breathes. If you treat it well, it will naturally reward you with endless beauty and value. May all your Hetian jades become more moist and treasured with time!
