Why are certificates so important? 🤔

In the jade market, especially for online transactions, a certificate is almost the only 'ID card.' It helps you initially determine the authenticity, type, and basic properties of a piece of jade. Think about it, spending thousands or even tens of thousands on a piece of jade, can you feel at ease without a certificate? It's like buying a car without a certificate of conformity; you always feel like something is missing. Moreover, with an authoritative certificate, it's more convincing for subsequent transfers and collections.

I've summarized that a qualified jade identification certificate usually contains the following core elements:

  • Identification Institution Name and Qualification: This is the most important point! You must choose certificates issued by national or provincial authoritative institutions. For example:

* National Gemstone Testing Center (NGTC): This is the most authoritative gemstone identification institution in China, bar none! Its certificates have the highest gold content and are most widely recognized. Many of my own collections are specifically re-inspected by NGTC.
* Gemological Institute, China University of Geosciences (GIC): Also a very authoritative institution in China, with a profound academic background.
* Provincial and Municipal Gemstone Quality Supervision and Inspection Stations: Such as Guangdong Provincial Gold and Silver Jewelry Testing Center, Shanghai Gemstone Testing Center, etc., are also relatively reliable choices.

Pitfall Alert: Be wary of those 'bogus institutions' whose names sound grand but whose qualifications cannot be found, or those only famous in a small area! Certificates issued by them are basically worthless.

  • Identification Result: This is the core content of the certificate, usually explicitly stating the name of the jade. For example, 'Hetian Jade,' 'Jadeite,' 'Dushan Jade,' etc. Here, special attention should be paid to the words 'optimization treatment.'

* Natural A-grade: Refers to natural jade that has not undergone any artificial optimization treatment, which is our goal.
* B-grade/C-grade: Usually refers to jadeite that has been treated with acid washing, glue filling, dyeing, etc., and its value is greatly reduced, even having no collection value.
* 'Treated'/'Optimized': Some certificates may state 'Hetian Jade (Treated)' or 'Hetian Jade (Optimized),' which usually means the jade has undergone some artificial intervention, such as filling, dyeing, etc. Although some optimizations are industry-recognized (e.g., B+C jadeite), 'optimization' of Hetian jade usually affects its natural properties and value.

My Experience: I once encountered a certificate that stated 'Hetian Jade (Optimized).' The seller said it would become more lustrous after playing with it, but after buying it, I found it was wax-filled, and it didn't change much after playing for a long time, which was a huge disappointment. So, if you see 'optimized' or 'treated,' be sure to ask what specific treatment method was used and purchase with caution.

  • Quality Parameters: Includes total mass (grams), density (g/cm³), refractive index, etc. These are the physical properties of jade, and different types of jade have their specific parameter ranges. For example, the refractive index of Hetian jade is usually between 1.610 and 1.630. These data are measured by professional instruments from identification institutions and can be used as auxiliary judgment criteria.


  • Photos and Description: Certificates usually include photos of the jade, along with descriptions of its shape, color, and dimensions. Upon receiving the certificate, be sure to carefully check if the photo matches the actual item and if the description is accurate. I've seen 'cat for a tiger' operations where the photo was of jade A, but the actual item was jade B! 😡


  • Appraiser's Signature and Date: Formal certificates will have the appraiser's signature or stamp, and the appraisal date. This represents the identification institution's responsibility for the certificate.


  • Query Method: This is the most crucial step! Most authoritative institutions' certificates can now be queried on their official websites. After receiving the certificate, immediately go to the official website, enter the certificate number, and verify that all information matches. If it cannot be found or the information does not match, then the certificate is fake! Never trust those so-called 'internal websites' or 'mini-program queries'; only recognize official websites!

* Don't blindly believe in certificates, but don't go without them either. Certificates are an entry-level guarantee, but they cannot completely replace your discerning eye. Observe more, touch more, learn more; cultivating your appreciation ability is key.
* Re-inspection is paramount. If you purchase high-value jade, or have doubts about the certificate, it's best to take it to an authoritative institution for re-inspection yourself. Although it will cost tens to a hundred yuan more, it's well worth it for peace of mind!
* A certificate is only an 'identity document' for jade, it does not represent quality. A certificate can only tell you if it's natural Hetian jade, but it won't tell you the whiteness, fineness, or oiliness of the Hetian jade. Judging the quality of jade still requires your professional knowledge and experience.
