When it comes to Bi Yu jade, many friends' first reaction is that rich green hue. But did you know? The waters of Bi Yu jade run deep! The market is flooded with various 'Bi Yu' jades, from Russian Bi Yu, Canadian Bi Yu, to Qinghai Bi Yu, and even some 'imitations.' It's easy to fall into traps if you're not careful. Today, I'm going to share all my identification experiences accumulated over the years, hoping to help everyone avoid detours and buy the truly desirable good Bi Yu jade!

🔍 Bi Yu Jade Identification: Start with These Points!

1. Look at the Color: Hue, Uniformity, and Maturity

The color of Bi Yu jade is its most intuitive feature. High-quality Bi Yu jade should be spinach green, that rich, stable green with a slight hint of ink, just like fresh spinach leaves. But just looking at the color isn't enough; you also need to pay attention to:

* Hue: Russian Bi Yu jade's green is usually brighter, even somewhat 'emerald,' while Hetian-produced Bi Yu jade tends to be darker green or dark green, exuding a subtle oily luster. Canadian Bi Yu jade is mostly light green, often accompanied by black spots.
* Uniformity: Good Bi Yu jade has an even color distribution, without obvious color differences or patches. If a piece of Bi Yu jade has uneven colors, or even large areas of 'mottled colors,' its value will be greatly reduced.
* Maturity: This is a more esoteric term but is key to identifying Hetian jade. Mature Bi Yu jade's color will appear more stable, oily, as if it has been tempered by time, with a 'glutinous' feel. New Bi Yu jade, on the other hand, may appear 'raw,' with the color superficial and lacking depth.

2. Look at the Structure: Fibrous Interweaving and Black Spots

The internal structure of Bi Yu jade is an important basis for identifying its origin and quality. Under a strong flashlight, you will find:

* Fibrous Interweaving Structure: This is a typical feature of Hetian jade, and Bi Yu jade is no exception. The fibrous interweaving structure of high-quality Bi Yu jade will be very fine, almost invisible to the naked eye, but under a magnifying glass, you can see a dense, felt-like structure. This structure gives Bi Yu jade its unique toughness and oily luster.
* Black Spots (Chromite): This is one of the 'identity proofs' of Bi Yu jade, especially Russian Bi Yu jade. High-quality Russian Bi Yu jade is usually accompanied by a small number of fine black spots, which are chromite inclusions formed during the jade's formation. However, be aware that too many, too large, or unevenly distributed black spots will affect the beauty and value of the Bi Yu jade. Qinghai Bi Yu jade has relatively fewer black spots, and they are mostly punctate or linear.

3. Look at the Oiliness and Luster: Hands-on Feel is Most Important!

The 'oiliness' of Hetian jade is its soul, and Bi Yu jade is no exception. Good Bi Yu jade will have a warm, smooth, greasy feel when held, as if its surface is coated with a layer of oil. This oiliness is not external brightness but emanates from within.

* Luster: The luster of high-quality Bi Yu jade is subtle, an oily luster, rather than a glass-like, glaring luster. After playing with it for a period, the oiliness will become more apparent, and the luster will become softer.
* Hands-on Feel: Pick up a piece of Bi Yu jade and feel its weight and temperature. Real Hetian jade has a higher density and will feel heavy in hand. At the same time, it will quickly absorb body temperature, becoming warm and moist.

4. Listen to the Sound: Tapping to Distinguish True from False

Although not as intuitive as the previous points, tapping sound is also an auxiliary identification method. Gently tap the Bi Yu jade with a hard object (such as a fingernail or another piece of jade). Real Bi Yu jade will emit a clear, pleasant 'steel sound' with a metallic quality, while imitations or inferior products may produce a dull, muffled sound.

⚠️ Beware of These 'Traps'!

* Dyed Quartzite: Bright color, but lacks oiliness, has a glassy luster, no fibrous interweaving structure inside, and shows granular structure under a magnifying glass.
* Glass Imitations: Visible air bubbles inside, feels light in hand, lacks the warm and moist feel of Hetian jade.
* Xiu Jade, Dushan Jade Impersonations: Their hardness, density, and luster differ from Hetian jade. It requires more observation and hands-on experience to distinguish.

💡 My Personal Tips:

When I first started playing with Bi Yu jade, I also paid a lot of tuition fees. The worst time was when I spent a lot of money on a piece of 'spinach green,' only to find it full of black spots when I shined a light on it – it was like 'sesame paste'! 😂 So my experience is: look more, buy less, get hands-on more, and communicate more! It's best to find a reliable jade merchant or experienced master and learn from them. At the same time, don't blindly trust certificates; a certificate is just a reference, and ultimately, it's up to your own discerning eye.
