🔍 Jade Bangle Authentication: The "Three Looks, One Touch, One Listen" You Must Know!

Many beginners might think that jade authentication requires various high-tech instruments. This is not entirely true! For daily purchases, mastering some basic visual and tactile authentication methods can help you avoid most fakes and inferior products. I've summarized them as "Three Looks, One Touch, One Listen":

#### 1️⃣ Look at the Luster: Glassy Luster is King! 💎

Genuine A-grade jadeite (A-货翡翠) exhibits a very unique "glassy luster" on its surface, which is characteristic of the hard jade mineral. It appears clear and transparent, just like glass. B-grade jadeite (acid-washed and resin-filled), due to acid treatment and resin injection, will have a duller surface luster, even a "waxy luster" or "resinous luster," lacking clarity. C-grade jadeite (dyed) may have even poorer luster, sometimes appearing lifeless.

My Experience Sharing: The first time I visited Ruili, Yunnan, a local master taught me to hold the bangle under natural light and gently rotate it, observing its reflections. A-grade jadeite's reflections are very sharp and clear, like twinkling little stars. In contrast, B-grade and C-grade jadeite's reflections appear blurry, soft, and even have a "greasy" feel. This little trick has always worked for me!

#### 2️⃣ Look at the Structure: Fibrous Intertwined, Fine and Even! 🌿

The internal structure of jadeite is a crucial basis for its authentication. A-grade jadeite is composed of countless tiny hard jade mineral crystals intertwined, a structure known as "fibrous intertwined structure." Under a magnifying glass, you'll see these crystals interwoven, forming a tight and orderly texture. This structure gives jadeite its high toughness and hardness.

How to Observe? Find a magnifying glass (10x or 20x will do) and carefully examine the side of the bangle or a less perfectly polished area. The crystal grains of A-grade jadeite will appear relatively fine and uniform. If you see coarse grains, a loose structure, or obvious reticulated cracks (which are traces of B-grade acid washing), then be wary! I once saw a "high-ice type" bangle that the seller praised to the skies, but when I looked at it with a 10x magnifying glass, its internal structure was as rough as broken glass, and I immediately ruled it out.

#### 3️⃣ Look at the Color: Naturally Distributed, with Color Roots! 🌈

Flaws of C-grade: The color of dyed jadeite often appears overly vibrant and uniform, lacking variations in depth, and the color floats on the surface without color roots. When illuminated with a strong flashlight, the color of dyed jadeite will appear very unnatural, and you might even see dye concentrated in the fissures. A friend of mine once bought an "Imperial Green" bangle that faded after wearing it for a short time. Later, authentication revealed it was a typical C-grade, which was heartbreaking.

#### 4️⃣ Feel the Touch: Icy Smooth, Substantial! ❄️

Jadeite has excellent thermal conductivity, so it feels uniquely cool to the touch. Moreover, A-grade jadeite has a relatively high density (usually around 3.33g/cm³), so it feels substantial and weighty in hand. At the same time, its polished surface is very smooth and delicate, offering a warm and jade-like tactile sensation.

Comparative Experience: Plastic and glass imitations feel lighter and lack that icy coolness. B-grade jadeite, due to resin injection, might feel a bit "澀" (astringent) or "黏" (sticky), not as smooth as A-grade.

#### 5️⃣ Listen to the Sound: Clear and Melodious, Lingering! 🔔

This is a more advanced authentication method that requires some experience. Gently tap two A-grade jadeite bangles together (be careful not to tap too hard to avoid damage), or suspend a bangle with a thin string and gently tap it with a coin. A-grade jadeite will produce a clear, melodious, and lingering sound, like metal clashing, with a resonant aftertone.

Sound of B-grade and C-grade: B-grade and C-grade, due to internal structural damage or resin injection, will produce a dull, short sound, or even a "咔咔" (cracking) plastic-like sound.
