First, we need to understand that authenticating jadeite essentially means determining whether it has undergone artificial optimization treatment, or if it's simply a counterfeit or inferior product. Common 'fake jadeite' on the market mainly includes B-goods, C-goods, B+C-goods, and some substitutes that are not jadeite at all, such as Xiuyan jade, Malaysian jade, and Shuimotzi. Today, we will mainly focus on distinguishing between B-goods, C-goods, and natural A-goods.

1. Look at the Luster: The 'Glassy Luster' of A-goods is King! ✨

Natural A-grade jadeite, without any acid washing or resin filling, will exhibit a very vibrant and clear 'glassy luster' on its surface. This luster is determined by the natural mineral crystal structure, and when light reflects off the surface, it appears particularly bright and sharp, just like glass. B-grade jadeite, due to strong acid soaking and resin filling, has a damaged surface structure, and its luster will appear dull, muted, or even somewhat like a 'waxy luster' or 'resinous luster'. I remember once, at an exhibition, I saw a 'high-ice' pendant with a particularly green color, but something felt off. Upon closer inspection, its luster was that kind of lifeless 'waxy sheen', and it felt wrong as soon as I touched it – sure enough, it was a B-good! So, luster is the first line of defense!

2. Feel the Touch: Cool, Smooth, and Heavy! ❄️

Natural jadeite has a higher specific gravity, giving it a substantial, weighty feel in the hand. Moreover, due to its dense crystalline structure, it feels very cool, delicate, and smooth to the touch. Even in hot summer, it will feel cool when first handled. B-grade jadeite, due to resin filling, will be slightly lighter in specific gravity, and may not feel as cool as A-grade jadeite, or even feel a bit '澀澀' (astringent). Additionally, the surface may exhibit a slight 'orange peel effect', where the surface shows tiny ripples similar to an orange peel under reflected light. These are characteristics of natural jadeite. B-grade jadeite, due to strong acid treatment and resin filling, has a damaged internal structure, lacks 'Cui Xing', and its surface may show 'acid corrosion mesh patterns' resembling spider webs, or appear very smooth without the 'orange peel effect'. I usually use a 10x magnifying glass for careful observation; these subtle features often reveal the truth.

5. Smell the Odor: Beware of Chemical Residues! 👃

This is a more direct but not 100% accurate method. Some B-grade jadeite, if the acid washing and resin filling are not thorough during processing, may retain some chemical odors, such as acidic or gluey smells. However, this method is not absolute, as some well-treated B-grade jadeite may not have any odor, and A-grade jadeite can also absorb odors if stored in a smelly environment for a long time. Therefore, this method should only be used as an auxiliary judgment.
