Hello, fellow collectors! I'm Old Wang, a collections manager who has been dealing with Hetian jade for most of my life. Over the years, I've handled countless treasures and witnessed many beautiful jades lose their luster due to improper care. Today, I'd like to share my accumulated daily maintenance secrets for Hetian jade, hoping that your beloved jade will become more lustrous and beautiful with proper care.

Scenario Introduction:
I remember when I first started in this field, a senior colleague gave me an uncut jade pebble and urged me to play with it carefully. At that time, I was young and thought, isn't jade just for wearing? Soon after, that originally warm and moist pebble became somewhat dry, and even developed some fine cracks. My senior colleague just shook his head and smiled, saying, "Xiao Wang, jade has a life of its own; you need to 'feed' it with your heart." From then on, I truly began to study the art of jade maintenance, especially for Hetian jade, whose unique oily texture and warmth require our meticulous care.

Core Techniques:

  • "Playing" is the best maintenance, but the method matters.

* Hand Playing: This is the most common and effective maintenance method. When worn or played with daily, the oils and sweat secreted by the human body will slowly penetrate the microporous structure of the jade, making it more oily and moist. However, it's crucial that your hands are clean, free of grease and sweat, and especially free of chemical substances like perfume or cosmetics. I usually wash my hands, dry them with a clean cotton cloth, and then start playing. The playing time should not be too long, half an hour to an hour is sufficient, allowing the jade to "breathe."
* Cloth Playing: For some collectible jade pieces that are not often worn, or raw jade materials that are just beginning to be played with, I recommend gently wiping them with a soft pure cotton cloth (such as a glasses cloth or deerskin cloth). This not only removes surface dust but also forms a patina on the jade surface through friction, increasing its luster. Remember not to use rough fabrics, as they may scratch the jade surface.

  • Cleaning is fundamental, gentleness is the principle.

* Daily Cleaning: Worn Hetian jade, especially bracelets and pendants, can easily accumulate dust and sweat. I usually prepare a basin of warm water (30-40℃), add a few drops of neutral hand soap or baby shower gel, and soak the jade for 5-10 minutes. Then, I gently brush the crevices and carved areas of the jade with a soft toothbrush. After rinsing thoroughly, dry it with a clean, soft cotton cloth and let it air dry in a ventilated place. Never use hot water or chemical cleaners, as they can damage the jade's structure and luster.
* Deep Cleaning (Use with Caution): For jade pieces that have not been cleaned for a long time or have deep dirt, an ultrasonic cleaning machine can be considered, but the time should be short, no more than 1 minute, and ensure that the jade has no cracks or inlays. I personally rarely use this method, as ultrasonic vibrations can cause potential damage to the internal structure of the jade.

  • Avoid "natural enemies," prevent problems before they arise.

* Avoid Collisions: Although jade has high hardness, its toughness is poor. Once impacted, it is extremely prone to cracks or even breakage. My experience is that it's best to remove and safely store jade during strenuous exercise or heavy physical labor. I once knew a collector who wore a Hetian jade bracelet while playing basketball, and accidentally, the bracelet broke into several pieces, which was heartbreaking.
* Avoid High Temperatures and Strong Light: High temperatures can alter the molecular structure inside the jade, leading to dehydration, loss of luster, and even a "burnt color." Direct strong light will accelerate the aging of the jade. Therefore, do not expose Hetian jade to sunlight for extended periods or near heat sources, such as stoves or radiators. My jade pieces are usually stored in a dark, constant temperature and humidity jade box.
* Avoid Chemicals: Perfume, shampoo, cosmetics, cooking fumes, and other chemical substances can corrode the jade surface, causing it to lose its luster. Therefore, it's best to remove jade when applying makeup, showering, or cooking.

Precautions:
* Regular Inspection: Develop the habit of regularly inspecting your jade for new cracks, wear, or looseness. Especially for inlaid jade pieces, check if the setting is secure.
* Separate Storage: Jade or jewelry of different hardness should be stored separately to avoid mutual friction and damage. I usually prepare a separate soft cloth bag or jade box for each piece of jade.
* The Dialectic of "Avoiding Oil" and "Liking Oil": Hetian jade "likes oil" refers to the natural oils secreted by the human body, which can moisturize the jade. However, "avoiding oil" refers to industrial oils such as cooking fumes and engine oil, which can block the pores of the jade and make it dull.

Experience Summary:
Caring for jade is like caring for a person; it requires patience, meticulousness, and love. A piece of Hetian jade, from raw stone to finished product, and then to our hands, has gone through thousands of years of geological changes and the carving of skilled craftsmen. It carries culture and contains spiritual energy. The maintenance we do is not only to preserve its beauty but also to respect this essence of heaven and earth and cultural heritage. As long as you care for it with your heart, your Hetian jade will surely reward you with its warm luster and eternal charm. Remember, the best maintenance is to be with it every day, feeling its temperature and changes with your heart. I wish all fellow collectors a jade-like life, full of blessings and longevity!
