Mutton fat jade is a top-grade Hetian jade, and its whiteness is 'greasy white,' with a slight warm tone, not stark white or greenish-white. I almost got fooled by a 'high white' Russian jade before; although it was very white, it lacked the warm oiliness of Hetian jade and appeared somewhat 'treacherously white.' Remember, whiteness should be considered in conjunction with fineness and oiliness, not in isolation.

B. Craftsmanship (Carving): The Finishing Touch!

A good piece of jade material, without exquisite craftsmanship, will also lose its luster. The quality of the carving directly affects the artistic value and wearing effect of the pendant.

* Smooth Lines: Good carving always features smooth, natural, and continuous lines, without breaks or stiffness. Especially for figural pieces, whether the facial expressions are vivid and the drapery is flowing are standards for evaluating carving.
* Proportional Harmony: Whether it's a figure, animal, or flora and fauna, the overall proportions must be harmonious and aesthetically pleasing. I've seen some pendants where the jade quality was good, but the carving was crude, with disproportionate heads and bodies for figures, or unbalanced limbs for animals, instantly lowering the grade.

The skin color of Hetian jade is one of its 'ID cards' and a characteristic many collectors pursue. Of course, the prerequisite is natural skin color!
