Having collected jade for thirty years, I deeply understand that a warm and lustrous piece of Hetian jade is not only the essence of heaven and earth but also a vessel carrying years and emotions. It's like a living spirit that requires our meticulous care to radiate its most captivating glow. Today, I'm sharing all the Hetian jade care insights I've gathered over the years, hoping your beautiful jade can also be passed down through generations, shining as brightly as ever.

Scenario Introduction:
I remember when I first started, I didn't understand proper care. A beloved piece of mutton-fat white jade quickly became dull, and even developed some subtle 'dry cracks.' It pained me so much I couldn't eat for days. Later, I consulted an old master who taught me that jade care isn't just simple wiping; it's an art, a way of communicating with the jade. From then on, I began to systematically learn and practice, gradually mastering its secrets.

Core Techniques:

  • 'Playing' is the best care: For Hetian jade, 'playing' (handling and rubbing) is the source of its vitality. Through the friction between hands and jade, the body's natural oils and sweat gradually penetrate the jade's microscopic pores, making it more oily and delicate, a process known as 'developing a patina.' But remember, 'play with clean hands.' Your hands must be clean to avoid oil stains and dust contaminating the jade. I usually wash my hands, dry them with a soft cotton cloth, and then begin playing. Persisting for half an hour to an hour daily, you'll find the jade's luster becomes increasingly warm and moist.

  • Regular cleaning, gentle treatment: Although playing nourishes the jade, daily wear or placement inevitably collects dust or dirt. My method is: prepare a basin of warm water (never hot water, which can damage the jade quality), add a small amount of neutral detergent (like baby wash), and soak the jade for 5-10 minutes. Then, use a soft-bristled toothbrush (I prefer a child's toothbrush for its softer bristles) to gently scrub the jade's surface and carved crevices. After cleaning, rinse thoroughly with clean water, dry with a clean, soft cotton cloth, and finally air dry. Be careful not to use any chemical cleaners or hard brushes, as they can scratch the jade surface.

  • Avoid high temperatures and sun exposure: Hetian jade fears dryness and high temperatures the most. Prolonged exposure to high temperatures or direct sunlight can cause the internal moisture of the jade to evaporate, leading to dryness and even 'dehydration,' affecting its oiliness and luster. My experience is that when wearing it in summer, try to avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight; when not wearing it, I place the jade in a cool, dark, and moderately humid place, such as a jewelry box, or wrapped in a soft cloth.

  • Keep away from chemicals and hard objects: Perfumes, cosmetics, acids, alkalis, and other chemicals can corrode Hetian jade, causing its surface to lose luster. Therefore, it's best to remove the jade when applying makeup or perfume. Although jade has high hardness, it should still be protected from collisions with hard objects to prevent cracks or chips. I once accidentally dropped a jade plaque; although it didn't shatter, it left a small chip on the edge, which still bothers me to this day.

Precautions:
* Avoid 'dry playing': If the jade has not been worn for a long time and feels dry, do not play with it directly. Instead, soak it in purified water for a while to allow it to absorb moisture before playing.
* Regular inspection: Develop a habit of regularly inspecting your jade for cracks, chips, or loose knots, and address them promptly to prevent further damage.
* Storage environment: For collection pieces not worn for long periods, it's recommended to store them in individual boxes with soft padding, maintaining a certain humidity, and avoiding friction with other hard objects.

Experience Summary:
Hetian jade care values persistence and meticulousness. It's not an overnight process but a cumulative one. When you care for it with your heart, it will reward you with its warmest and most captivating luster. Every carefully nurtured piece of Hetian jade is not just an ornament but an art piece with stories and warmth, carrying the owner's love and time. I hope my experiences help you better accompany your beautiful jade, allowing them to radiate timeless brilliance!
