Hello, fellow jade enthusiasts! I'm Old Zhang, and I've been playing with jade for thirty years. From my initial ignorance to my current obsession, Hetian jade in my hands is not just a treasure, but a living, warm companion. Today, I want to share with you my insights on Hetian jade maintenance that I've accumulated over the years, hoping that your treasures will also become more lustrous and beautiful with proper care.

Scenario Introduction:
I still remember when I first acquired a piece of Hetian jade pebble. It was as warm and smooth as grease, and I couldn't put it down. But back then, I was young and only knew how to play with it, not how to maintain it. After a few years, the surface of the jade became somewhat dry, and its luster was greatly diminished. At that time, I was filled with regret, feeling as if my own child was sick. From then on, I was determined to delve into the art of Hetian jade maintenance, so that every piece of jade could radiate its deserved brilliance.

Core Techniques:

  • "Playing" is the best maintenance, but it requires proper methods:

* Clean hands for playing: This is the most basic. Before each session of playing with jade, be sure to wash and dry your hands thoroughly, ensuring no oil, sweat, cosmetic residue, etc., remains. These substances, if attached to the jade surface for a long time, will form a layer of "dirty patina," affecting the jade's warmth and smoothness. I usually use a mild hand soap and then dry my hands thoroughly with a soft cotton cloth.
* Even playing: Play with the jade comprehensively, not just one side. Allow every part of the jade to fully contact the oils and sweat from your hands (healthy sweat is the "nutrient solution" for jade). I like to hold the jade in my hand while reading or drinking tea, gently rubbing it, feeling its warm touch, and letting it slowly integrate with my body temperature.
* Gentle playing primarily, vigorous playing secondarily: Gentle playing refers to softly and slowly rubbing the jade, allowing it to gradually absorb the body's oils and sweat. Vigorous playing refers to generating heat through friction to accelerate the formation of the jade's patina. However, vigorous playing should be moderate; avoid violent friction to prevent damage to the jade. I generally prioritize gentle playing, occasionally speeding up slightly when the jade feels a bit "tired," but never with excessive force.

  • Keep away from chemicals and hard objects:

* Avoid contact with perfumes, soaps, detergents, etc.: These chemical substances can corrode the jade surface, causing it to lose its luster. I have a habit of taking off my jade when showering, washing dishes, or doing housework, and placing it in a safe place. Once, a friend wore his jade while showering, and soon after, the jade became dull and lusterless, much to his regret.
* Prevent bumps and knocks: Although Hetian jade has high hardness, its toughness is relatively weak, and it can still crack or even break if subjected to external impact. Therefore, when wearing it, avoid collision with hard objects, and when storing it, place it separately, preferably wrapped in a soft cloth. On my desk, I have a special brocade box for jade, lined with thick velvet cloth, and each piece of jade has its own "exclusive spot."

  • Regular cleaning and nourishment:

* Warm water cleaning: If the jade surface is dusty or dirty, you can gently wipe it with a clean, soft cloth dampened with warm water. Avoid using hot or cold water, as extreme temperature changes can damage the jade. After cleaning, simply dry it with a dry soft cloth.
* "Oil nourishment" requires caution: Many people like to use oil to nourish jade, but there's a lot of knowledge involved. I personally don't recommend beginners to randomly use oil, especially vegetable oils, which can easily oxidize and turn yellow, blocking the jade's pores. If you must use oil, it's recommended to choose colorless and odorless baby oil or professional jade maintenance oil, apply a small amount, and then repeatedly wipe with a soft cloth until the jade surface is no longer greasy. I usually apply a tiny bit of baby oil every winter when the air is dry, gently wipe it, and then play with it using a deerskin cloth, allowing the jade to fully absorb it.

Precautions:
* Avoid direct sunlight and high temperatures: Long-term exposure to sunlight or high-temperature environments can alter the molecular structure inside the jade, causing it to dehydrate, become dry, lose luster, and even develop a "roughness." All my jade pieces are stored in a cool, dark place.
* Maintain appropriate humidity: Jade likes a humid environment. During particularly dry seasons, you can place a small cup of water near where the jade is stored to increase air humidity.

Experience Summary:
Jade maintenance is about persistence and care. It's not an overnight process, but a cumulative nourishment. Every piece of Hetian jade carries the essence of nature's billions of years and also the emotions and stories of us wearers. If you treat it well, it will naturally reward you with its warm luster and lively charm. Remember, the best maintenance is your love and meticulous care. I hope my little experiences can help everyone better cherish their beautiful jade, allowing them to be passed down through generations, forever radiant!
