This oily luster is naturally formed and cannot be achieved by post-polishing. I once bought a piece that looked very white but felt dry to the touch. Later, I learned it was 'high white and dry,' which, despite being white, lacked sufficient oiliness, significantly reducing its value.
* Luster (Run Du): Luster is a comprehensive reflection of the jade quality. A good Hetian jade pendant will give a feeling of warmth radiating from within, like solidified fat. It complements oiliness; jade with good oiliness will naturally have good luster.

2. Look at the color: Whiteness is not the only standard!

Many people pursue 'mutton fat white,' but true mutton fat white jade is extremely rare and expensive. In fact, Hetian jade comes in many colors, such as celadon white jade, jasper, ink jade, and sugar jade, each with its unique beauty. When choosing, don't blindly pursue extreme whiteness, but look at the purity and uniformity of the color. For example, for jasper, check if the color is rich and even, without black spots; for celadon white jade, check if the degree of white tinged with celadon is harmonious. Personally, I really like that glutinous celadon white jade; although it's not the whitest, its warmth is simply amazing! 😍

3. Look at the craftsmanship: Carving is the second life of jade!

Even a good piece of jade material will be greatly diminished without exquisite carving. Carving is not only reflected in the beauty of the pattern but also in the fluidity of lines, the vividness of the shape, and the overall artistic conception. 4. Look at flaws: Be wary of cracks, cotton, stiffness, and infiltration!

'Nine out of ten jades have cracks' is common, and perfectly flawless Hetian jade is almost non-existent. But we need to learn to distinguish which flaws are acceptable and which are fatal.

* Cracks: The most critical flaw! Especially penetrating cracks, which will seriously affect the jade's durability and value. When purchasing, be sure to use a strong flashlight to inspect carefully, especially the corners and fragile areas.
* Cotton: White flocculent material inside the jade. Minor cotton is acceptable and can even add a hazy beauty. However, if there are too many or too large cotton spots that affect the overall aesthetics, careful consideration is needed.
* Stiffness (Jiang): Hard, opaque parts in the jade, usually white or grayish-white. Stiff spots affect the jade's oiliness and luster. If the stiff spots are too large or in a prominent position, they will also affect the value.
* Infiltration (Qin): Colors formed by foreign minerals infiltrating the jade, such as iron infiltration forming yellowish-brown. Some infiltration colors are beautiful, like 'sugar infiltration,' but some can look messy.

My little tip: For pendants, if the flaw is in an inconspicuous position and does not affect the overall aesthetics and structure, it is acceptable. After all, perfect Hetian jade can cost several times more! 💰

💡 Practical Tips for Novices:

  • Look more, buy less; learn first, then act. Don't rush to buy expensive items at first. You can start with small pieces ranging from a few hundred to one or two thousand to gain experience.

  • Find a reliable seller. This is paramount! Choose a seller with a good reputation who supports re-inspection. It's best if they have a physical store where you can feel the jade firsthand.

  • Ask for a certificate. When purchasing a valuable Hetian jade pendant, always ask for an appraisal certificate issued by a national authority, such as the National Gemstone Testing Center or provincial inspection centers.

  • Compare more, don't be impulsive. It doesn't hurt to compare prices. Look at similar products from different sellers and compare jade quality, price, and craftsmanship.

  • Trust your intuition. After all, you'll be wearing it yourself, so choosing a piece that you find pleasing and resonates with you is also very important!
