Let's get back to the point. Identifying Bi Yu is not as simple as just looking at the color. You must remember these points!

  • Look at the color:

* Natural Bi Yu: The color is usually not uniform, with variations in depth, and even color roots. Good Bi Yu has a rich color, such as the classic 'spinach green,' which will have tiny black dots (chromite). This is a natural characteristic of Bi Yu and an important basis for identification. These black dots, when viewed under a magnifying glass, will appear irregular in shape, not perfectly round or dotted. I once met a novice friend who thought the black spots on Bi Yu were flaws and almost missed out on a top-grade Bi Yu! 😅
* Fakes (e.g., glass, dyed quartzite): The color is often too uniform, lacking layers, and appears 'dead.' The color of dyed Bi Yu may float on the surface; careful observation might reveal color accumulation in cracks.

  • Look at the structure (feel by hand, look with a magnifying glass):

* Natural Bi Yu: Fine texture, compact structure, feels warm and oily to the touch. When observed under light or a magnifying glass, you can see a fibrous interweaving structure, commonly known as a 'felt-like structure.' This structure is a typical characteristic of Bi Yu and the reason for its good toughness. My personal experience is that when lightly scratched with a fingernail, the surface of natural Bi Yu is relatively smooth and not easily scratched.
* Fakes: Glass products will have bubbles, and the internal structure is singular; quartzite has a stronger granular feel and lacks an oily luster. Some synthetic materials may feel 'rough' or too cold.

  • Listen to the sound (tapping method):

* Natural Bi Yu: Gently tapping it will produce a crisp and pleasant sound with a metallic resonance. I usually hang a Bi Yu bangle with a thin string and then gently tap it with another piece of jade or a coin. The crisper the sound, the better the jade quality.
* Fakes: The sound will be dull, or produce a 'clinking' sound like glass, lacking the unique charm of jade.

  • Measure density (weigh in hand):

* Natural Bi Yu: High density, feels noticeably heavy in hand. The density of Bi Yu is generally between 2.95-3.10 g/cm³. If you frequently handle jade, this feeling will be very obvious. Every time I get a piece of Bi Yu, I first weigh it in my hand. Experience tells me that if it feels light, it's probably fake.
* Fakes: Glass, plastic, etc., have lower densities and feel light in hand.
