Hello fellow collectors, I'm Old Wang, a collector who has been involved with jade for half a lifetime. Today, I want to talk about the care of one of my favorites – turquoise. In recent years, the popularity of turquoise has remained high, sought after for both investment and adornment. However, many only appreciate its beauty, overlooking its 'delicacy.' I've seen too many cases where turquoise loses its color or cracks due to improper care, which is truly heartbreaking. So, today, combining my decades of experience, I'll share some practical turquoise care tips, hoping to help your treasures maintain their brilliance forever.

Scenario Introduction:

I remember years ago, when I first started, I acquired a piece of high-grade Hubei high-porcelain blue turquoise from an old master. At that time, it was deeply blue and as moist as solidified fat. The old master admonished me: 'Xiao Wang, this turquoise has a life of its own; you must nurture it with your heart.' I was half-skeptical then, thinking it was just some mystical talk. But later, I personally saw his turquoise, which he had played with for years, with its patina and color completely transformed, and only then did I truly understand the essence of 'nurturing.'

Core Techniques: Turquoise's 'Three Fears, Three Joys' and Daily Maintenance

Turquoise care, ultimately, is about understanding its 'temperament.' I summarize it as 'three fears, three joys':

Three Fears:

  • Fear of Oil Stains: Turquoise has a porous structure and easily absorbs oils and sweat. While moderate 'playing' can help it develop a patina, excessive oil will clog its pores, causing the color to darken, blacken, or even develop 'blotches.' I once had a piece of turquoise that accidentally got kitchen grease on it; I didn't clean it in time, and as a result, its local color became dull and it took a long time to slowly recover.

* Countermeasures: Avoid contact with cooking fumes, cosmetics, perfumes, etc. When wearing, try to avoid direct prolonged contact with the skin, especially in summer when sweating is heavy. After each wear, gently wipe the surface with a clean, soft cotton cloth to remove dust and sweat stains.

  • Fear of High Temperatures and Sun Exposure: High temperatures can cause turquoise to lose water from its internal structure, leading to lighter, whiter colors, and even cracking. Sun exposure is a major taboo; UV rays accelerate its aging. A friend of mine left his turquoise bracelet in the car during summer, and within a few days, he noticed the color had significantly faded.

* Countermeasures: Keep away from heat sources such as stoves, radiators, and high-temperature lighting. Avoid direct sunlight, especially in hot summers. When not wearing, it's best to store it in a cool, dark place, such as a jewelry box.

  • Fear of Hard Object Collisions and Chemical Corrosion: Turquoise has low hardness and is easily scratched or damaged by hard objects. At the same time, it is very sensitive to acidic and alkaline substances, which can cause irreversible damage.

* Countermeasures: Be careful to avoid friction with hard objects when wearing. It's best to remove it when doing housework or exercising. Avoid contact with detergents, soaps, shower gels, and other chemicals. Be sure to remove it when showering or swimming.

Three Joys:

  • Loves Clean Water: Turquoise prefers a humid environment. Regular cleaning with clear water helps it retain moisture and remove surface dirt.

* Operating Steps: Take a small bowl of purified water (or boiled and cooled tap water) and immerse the turquoise for 15-30 minutes. Then, gently brush the surface crevices with a soft brush (like a baby toothbrush), and then dry with a clean, soft cloth. Note, do not use hot water or water containing chemicals.

  • Loves Playing: Moderate playing is key to turquoise developing a patina and changing color. The trace oils and sweat secreted by the human body, through long-term friction and penetration, will form a warm patina on the surface of the turquoise, and the color will become deeper and more lustrous.

* Operating Steps: Before playing, be sure to wash your hands thoroughly to ensure no oil or cosmetics. Gently rub and caress the turquoise with clean hands. Initially, you can play for 1-2 hours daily; once a preliminary patina forms on its surface, you can appropriately reduce the time. During playing, feel the temperature and changes of the turquoise; this is a pleasure in itself.

  • Loves Rest: Every treasure needs rest. Prolonged wearing and playing can also make turquoise 'tired.' Regularly letting it 'rest' helps it recover its vitality.

* Operating Steps: After wearing for a period, remove the turquoise, clean it with clear water, and then place it in a clean, cool, dark jewelry box to 'rest' for a few days or even a week. During this time, it will slowly absorb the moisture from the surrounding environment and restore its natural warmth.

Precautions:

* Never Rush: The patination and color change of turquoise is a long process; never use any 'quick fix' methods, such as applying large amounts of oil, which will only be counterproductive.
* Regular Inspection: Frequently check the turquoise for looseness, cracks, etc., and address them promptly to avoid further damage.
* Isolation for Multiple Collections: If you collect multiple pieces of turquoise, it's best to store them separately to avoid friction or color transfer between them.

Experience Summary:

Caring for turquoise is like nurturing a child; it requires patience, meticulousness, and love. It will repay you with unique warmth and brilliance through the accumulation of time. That high-porcelain blue piece passed down from the old master, now glows with inner brilliance and deep color, having weathered the years with me. Every time I see it, I recall the old master's teachings and am more convinced that if you treat everything with care, everything has a spirit. I hope my experience can help everyone better care for their turquoise, allowing them to bloom with more enchanting brilliance over the years and become a beautiful landscape in your collecting journey.

Remember, true value lies not just in the material itself, but in the emotion and time you invest. May all your turquoise become more beautiful with care, passed down through generations!
