It was not just an ornament; it was a medium for communicating with heaven and earth, and for praying for abundance. Another example is the "Han Ba Dao" (Eight-Knife Technique) craftsmanship of Han Dynasty jade. Its simple and fluid lines are not merely a display of skill but a concrete expression of the Han Dynasty's philosophical ideas of "unity of heaven and humanity" and "great form has no shape." When we examine ancient jade from a "cultural ecology" perspective, it ceases to be an isolated artifact and becomes an organic entity interacting with and influenced by its surrounding environment and prevailing ideologies.
II. Breakthroughs in Micro-trace Analysis: Unveiling the "Life Trajectory" of Ancient Jade
With the advancement of technology, micro-trace analysis is demonstrating immense potential in ancient jade research. What we previously observed as "patina" and "inclusions" with the naked eye or a magnifying glass can now be investigated in depth using techniques like high-magnification microscopy and spectroscopic analysis to understand their formation and evolution processes.
I once participated in the micro-trace analysis of a Warring States period jade bi disc. Through high-magnification microscopy, we not only discovered minute wear and tear on the surface of the bi disc caused by prolonged wearing, but also found trace amounts of cinnabar residue in some concealed grooves. This not only confirmed the ancient custom of applying cinnabar to jade artifacts but further suggested that this bi disc might have played an important role in a certain sacrificial ritual. These micro-traces are like the "life trajectory" of ancient jade, recording every stage from its excavation, processing, use, to burial, providing invaluable clues for us to reconstruct historical scenes.
III. Ancient Jade in "Contemporary Context": Rethinking Collection and Inheritance
In contemporary society, the value of ancient jade extends beyond historical and artistic dimensions, lying more in its cultural significance within a modern context. However, with the proliferation of imitation ancient jade and high-tech aging techniques, the authentication of ancient jade has become a major challenge.
I believe that in addition to traditional empirical identification, it is crucial to integrate scientific testing with a comprehensive understanding of the cultural background. For collectors, instead of pursuing "flawless perfection," it is more valuable to focus on the historical information and cultural value embodied by ancient jade. An ancient jade piece with clear signs of use might provoke more historical reflection and emotional resonance than a pristine, newly made imitation.
At the same time, we must also consider the issue of ancient jade's inheritance. How can ancient jade culture shine brightly in the new era? I believe this can be achieved through digital technology, establishing ancient jade databases to enable resource sharing; through cultural and creative development, integrating ancient jade elements into modern life to make them more accessible; and most importantly, by strengthening public education to allow more people to understand the charm of ancient jade and cultivate a love for traditional culture.
