Having been involved in the jade industry for over forty years, from an apprentice to now heading a jade carving studio, I have witnessed the ebbs and flows of jade carving art and personally participated in its development and transformation. Today, I want to share some of my latest thoughts on the current state of jade carving art, particularly concerning the concept of "preserving the essence and embracing innovation."
In recent years, with the rise of "Guochao" (China Chic) and a renewed appreciation for traditional culture, jade carving art has ushered in another spring. However, beneath this flourishing surface, we must soberly recognize that how to revitalize this ancient art in contemporary society is a question that requires deep contemplation. My view is that the future of jade carving art lies in "preserving the essence and embracing innovation."
"Preserving the essence" refers to safeguarding the roots and soul of jade carving art. This includes a profound understanding and respect for the material properties of jade. The warmth, subtlety, and resilience of jade are its unique qualities and the source of its artistic charm. We must not neglect the inherent characteristics of jade in pursuit of novelty, nor should we substitute it with inferior materials. Each piece of jade possesses unique textures, colors, and inclusions. The carver's role is to "carve according to the material," maximizing the display of jade's natural beauty. For instance, a piece of Hetian jade with natural "qiaose" (skillfully utilized natural color variations) can, if cleverly carved into themes like lotus flowers or koi fish, achieve artistic value and vitality far exceeding simple carving.
"Preserving the essence" also manifests in the inheritance and promotion of traditional culture. Jade carving art embodies thousands of years of cultural accumulation of the Chinese nation, from the jade dragons of the Hongshan culture and the jade cong of the Liangzhu culture, to the jade burial suits of the Han Dynasty and the Mughal jade carvings of the Qing Dynasty. All these reflect the aesthetic tastes, philosophical thoughts, and spiritual pursuits of people in different eras. We must not blindly pursue the forms of Western modern art and abandon our own cultural genes. For example, traditional themes such as "auspicious beasts bringing good fortune" and "blessings, prosperity, longevity, and joy," though seemingly conventional, carry auspicious meanings and beautiful wishes that are the common spiritual wealth of the Chinese nation. How to infuse new contemporary elements into traditional themes to better suit modern aesthetics is key to "preserving the essence." I once attempted to combine traditional dragon and phoenix patterns with modern geometric lines, which not only retained the majesty and splendor of dragons and phoenixes but also added a touch of modern simplicity and fashion, receiving very positive market feedback.
"Embracing innovation," on the other hand, is the driving force and vitality for the development of jade carving art. It means we must dare to break through traditional constraints and embrace new ideas, techniques, and forms of expression.
Firstly, innovation in themes. In addition to traditional auspicious themes, contemporary jade carving can increasingly focus on real life, natural landscapes, and human emotions. For example, I once saw a young jade carver incorporate silhouettes of urban skyscrapers into jade plaque designs, using the warmth of jade to temper the coldness of modern architecture, creating a unique and refreshing visual impact. Some works integrate elements of modern abstract art into jade carving, expressing deeper philosophical thoughts through the combination of points, lines, and planes—these are all very bold and successful attempts.
Secondly, innovation in craftsmanship. While traditional craftsmanship is fundamental, we must also actively explore new tools and technologies. For example, laser engraving and 3D printing, while unable to completely replace the warmth and charm of hand carving, can significantly improve efficiency and precision in certain refined, standardized, or auxiliary processes. The key is how to organically combine these new technologies with traditional craftsmanship, rather than simply replacing them. I once tried using modern polishing techniques to make the jade surface more delicate and smooth, while retaining the texture of traditional hand carving, allowing the work to reach new heights in both visual and tactile experience.
Furthermore, innovation in aesthetic concepts. In contemporary society, people's aesthetics are more diverse and individualized. Jade carving art should not only remain at the level of "exquisite, intricate, and skillful," but also pursue "meaning, artistic conception, and charm." A good jade carving work is not just a display of skill, but also an expression of emotion and a transmission of thought. For example, some jade carvings are beginning to emphasize the art of "leaving blank spaces," creating an ethereal and profound artistic conception through simple lines and spatial arrangements, which is a modern interpretation of the traditional freehand spirit.
Of course, "preserving the essence and embracing innovation" is not easy. It requires jade carvers to possess profound cultural knowledge, exquisite skills, and even more, a broad vision and the courage to experiment. In this process, we may encounter doubts and experience failures, but as long as we consistently adhere to our love for jade and our pursuit of art, we will surely find the path to timeless beauty.
In summary, the future of jade carving art lies in innovating within tradition and preserving the essence within innovation. We must respect tradition as we would an old friend, and embrace change as we would a new life. Only then can this ancient art of jade carving shine even brighter in the new era, becoming a cultural link connecting the past, present, and future.
