Each type of jade possesses unique physical properties and aesthetic characteristics. For instance, the vibrant green of jadeite imbues works with vitality, while the rich, fervent red of Nanhong agate can express a magnificent grandeur. As jade carvers, we are no longer confined to a single material but choose the most suitable jade according to the theme and expressive needs of the work. This requires us to have a deep understanding of the characteristics of various jades and to be proficient in carving techniques for different materials.
2. Expansion and Deepening of Themes: From Classical Imagery to Modern Life.
Traditional jade carving themes often revolved around mythical legends, historical figures, auspicious beasts, and flora and fauna, embodying people's aspirations for a beautiful life. However, in contemporary society, people's lifestyles and aesthetic tastes are changing. I have found that an increasing number of young collectors show keen interest in jade carving works with a modern and fashionable sensibility. For example, I have attempted to integrate urban architecture, abstract geometry, and even sci-fi elements into my jade carving creations, achieving unexpected results. This is not a deviation from tradition but an interpretation using modern language while inheriting the essence of traditional culture. We can infuse new contemporary spirit into traditional themes, or boldly explore new themes, making jade carving art more relevant to contemporary life.
3. Integration and Innovation of Techniques: From "Ingenious Craftsmanship" to "Profound Artistic Conception."
Traditional jade carving emphasized "ingenious craftsmanship," where exquisite carving skills were a crucial criterion for evaluating a work's value. Today, while maintaining superb craftsmanship, we also pursue "profound artistic conception." This means that a jade carving work is not merely a display of skill but also an expression of thought and emotion. I often ponder how to use techniques such as the combination of reality and illusion, negative space, and light and shadow to allow jade to convey infinite artistic conception within a limited space. For example, when carving landscape themes, I no longer solely pursue detailed depiction but create an "ineffable" charm through clever composition and carving strokes. Furthermore, some modern technologies, such as 3D modeling and laser carving, can serve as auxiliary tools to help us achieve more complex shapes and precise cuts, but the ultimate artistic presentation still relies on the jade carver's unique ingenuity.
II. Case Study: My "Breaking the Cocoon and Emerging as a Butterfly" Series
In my creative career, the "Breaking the Cocoon and Emerging as a Butterfly" series is a concentrated practice of the aforementioned philosophy. For this series, I chose Nanhong agate as the primary material because its vibrant red symbolizes the fervor and transformation of life.
In terms of theme, I abstract the life process of a butterfly, from larva to breaking the cocoon and emerging, into a spiritual sublimation. Each piece in the series presents this process from a unique perspective: some works depict a butterfly about to emerge from its cocoon, with faint wing patterns visible, symbolizing hope and readiness; others feature a butterfly soaring with outstretched wings, adorned with tiny diamonds, representing the brilliance and freedom after transformation.
Regarding techniques, I attempted to combine traditional round carving and relief carving with modern openwork and inlay techniques. For example, to convey the lightness of butterfly wings, I used extremely thin openwork carving, allowing light to penetrate and creating an ethereal and dynamic effect. Simultaneously, to enhance the modern feel and artistic quality of the works, I also experimented with micro-carving on Nanhong agate, depicting the intricate patterns on the butterfly's wings, showcasing meticulous craftsmanship in the details.
This series of works has been well-received in the market, not only winning professional awards but also gaining popularity among young collectors. This reinforces my belief that as long as jade carving art dares to innovate, it can find a language that resonates with the times.
