Its essence lies in understanding jade materials, adhering to traditional craftsmanship, and expressing the human spirit. However, being stuck in old ways is not a long-term solution. I have observed that in recent years, more and more jade carvers have begun to incorporate modern aesthetics, design concepts, and even technological elements into traditional jade carving. This is a positive sign.

For example, in terms of subject matter, in addition to traditional auspicious beasts, flowers, birds, and figures, some young jade carvers are starting to focus on contemporary social issues, concretizing abstract concepts, or drawing inspiration from modern art. I once saw a jade carving titled "Urban Rhythm," which used geometric lines and block structures to depict the prosperity and rhythm of a modern city. The material chosen was Hetian jade with celadon patterns from Xinjiang, and its black and white textures perfectly matched the theme of the work, moving every viewer. The success of this piece lies in its not completely abandoning the meticulous craftsmanship of traditional jade carving, but rather building upon it to imbue the work with a stronger sense of the times and deeper intellectual thought.

In terms of craftsmanship, in addition to traditional round carving, relief carving, and openwork carving, some studios are also exploring the application of auxiliary technologies such as laser engraving and 3D printing in jade carving design. Of course, these technologies are not meant to replace manual carving, but rather to serve as auxiliary tools, helping jade carvers achieve higher efficiency and precision in early-stage design and fine processing. For instance, when creating complex and repetitive patterns, 3D printing can quickly produce models for jade carvers to reference and modify, significantly shortening the design cycle.

With the improvement of consumer aesthetic standards and changes in consumption concepts, the market demand for personalized and customized jade carving is growing. In the past, jade carving works were mostly mass-produced or focused on traditional themes. I have deeply realized that many clients now have very specific requirements when customizing jade carvings. This intuitive and vivid communication method has greatly narrowed the distance between jade carving art and the general public. My studio has also tried to offer online live courses, inviting experienced jade carvers to explain jade identification, carving techniques, and other content, attracting many jade carving enthusiasts and beginners.

Furthermore, collaborating with universities and art institutions to conduct education and research in jade carving art is also a crucial aspect. By establishing jade carving majors, holding special exhibitions, and conducting academic seminars, more excellent jade carving talents can be cultivated, theoretical research in jade carving can be deepened, and intellectual support can be provided for the future development of jade carving art. I believe that only by allowing more young people to come into contact with and learn about jade carving can we ensure the continuous transmission of this ancient art.
