Distinguished colleagues, fellow jade enthusiasts, good day to you all. I am Chen Zhigang, and I have dedicated over thirty years to the jade industry, witnessing the ebbs and flows and development of jade carving art. Today, I want to discuss the "new life" of jade carving art – a topic encompassing inheritance and innovation, perseverance and breakthrough.

In recent years, with the diversification of societal aesthetics and advancements in technology, the jade carving industry faces unprecedented opportunities and challenges. We often say, "Jade uncarved is no treasure." Today, the profound meaning behind this "carving" extends far beyond mere knife skills; it lies in grasping the spirit of the times and expanding the boundaries of art.

I. The "Revitalization" and "Recreation" of Traditional Craftsmanship

The foundation of jade carving art lies in tradition. Whether it's the exquisite elegance of Yangzhou craftsmanship, the delicate refinement of Suzhou craftsmanship, or the dignified grandeur of Beijing craftsmanship, these millennia-old techniques are our invaluable treasures. However, inheritance is not merely replication. I often emphasize to my apprentices the importance of "revitalizing" tradition.

What does "revitalization" mean? For example, in the past, when carving figures, we often pursued realism, focusing on fluid drapery and dignified expressions. But now, we can try to integrate modern aesthetics, such as incorporating fashionable elements into traditional female figures or infusing more contemporary expressions and postures into Buddha statues, allowing traditional themes to radiate new vitality. This is not a departure from tradition but a deep understanding and recreation of its spirit.

Furthermore, in terms of material application, we previously focused on traditional jade materials such as white jade and nephrite. But now, with the development and exchange of jade resources both domestically and internationally, more distinctive jade materials have entered our view, such as Gobi jade, Xinjiang "gold silk" jade, and Russian jade. How to create unique works by combining traditional carving techniques with the characteristics of different jade materials is also a crucial aspect of "revitalizing" tradition. For instance, the natural skin color and unique shapes of Gobi jade are highly suitable for "skillful carving," allowing us to fully utilize its natural beauty, minimize artificial carving marks, and achieve a state of "harmony between heaven and man."

II. Cross-Boundary Integration: "Breaking Out" and "Empowering"

Innovation is the eternal driving force behind the development of jade carving art. In my opinion, contemporary innovation largely manifests in "cross-boundary integration."

Firstly, it's the integration with other art forms. Jade carving is no longer an isolated entity; it can be combined with painting, calligraphy, architecture, and even installation art. I once participated in a project where jade carving works were embedded into the walls of modern buildings. Through the interplay of light and shadow, it showcased a dialogue between the warmth of jade and the starkness of architecture, producing unexpected artistic effects. This integration not only enhanced the artistic value of jade carving but also expanded its application scenarios.

Secondly, it's the integration with technology. Some young jade carvers have begun to experiment with 3D printing technology for design modeling or using laser engraving for auxiliary processing. This is not meant to replace hand carving but serves as a tool to improve efficiency and achieve intricate effects that are difficult to attain through traditional manual methods. For example, when carving complex patterns or geometric shapes, 3D modeling can help us more precisely grasp proportions and structures, which are then refined manually, ensuring both artistic quality and production efficiency.

I have also seen some peers combine jade carving with fashion design, launching jade jewelry and cultural and creative products. These products are no longer lofty artworks but fashionable items integrated into daily life, allowing more young people to discover and fall in love with jade carving art. This act of "breaking out" undoubtedly injects new vitality into the jade carving industry.

III. Market-Oriented "Customization" and "Personalization"

In the context of a market economy, jade carving art also needs to consider market demand. In the past, we primarily created works and waited for discerning patrons. Now, with the growing demand for personalized consumer experiences, customized services have become a new trend.

Many collectors are no longer satisfied with purchasing ready-made works; they wish to participate in the creative process, incorporating their ideas and emotions into the pieces. This requires us jade carvers to possess not only exquisite skills but also excellent communication and design abilities, capable of visualizing abstract ideas from clients and ultimately presenting them through jade.

For example, if a client wishes to incorporate family totems or special anniversary elements into a jade pendant, we must creatively design based on these elements and select appropriate jade materials and carving techniques. This "customization" service not only enhances the uniqueness and collection value of the work but also deepens the emotional connection between the client and the piece.

IV. Conclusion and Outlook

The "new life" of jade carving art is a symbiotic journey of inheritance and innovation. We cannot be complacent, nor can we blindly chase trends. The key lies in how to bravely embrace the changes of the times while adhering to the essence of tradition, integrating modern aesthetics, technological means, and market demands.

In the future, I hope to see more young jade carvers, driven by their passion for jade and their pursuit of art, enter this industry. They are the future of jade carving art, the bridge between inheritance and innovation. At the same time, I call on those within and outside the industry to increase the promotion and education of jade carving art, allowing more people to understand jade culture and appreciate the beauty of jade carving.

I believe that as long as we consistently uphold the spirit of craftsmanship and embrace change with an open mind, jade carving art, this brilliant pearl, will undoubtedly shine even brighter in the new era. Thank you all!
