Title: Carving Jade into Masterpieces, Art Reborn: Inheritance and Innovation in Contemporary Jade Carving Art

I am Chen Zhigang. Having toiled in the jade industry for over thirty years, from an apprentice to the head of a jade carving studio, I have witnessed the rise and fall of jade carving art, and personally experienced its transformation and rebirth in a contemporary context. Today, I would like to share some of my latest thoughts and insights on contemporary jade carving art.

I. The Fusion of Tradition and Modernity: From "Likeness" to the Elevation of "Spiritual Resonance"

In the past, jade carving art emphasized "likeness" – the realistic reproduction of natural objects. Whether it was flowers, birds, fish, insects, figures, or landscapes, the aim was to carve them lifelike. While this realistic carving style undoubtedly showcased the artisans' superb skills, it also, to some extent, limited the imaginative scope of jade carving art.

However, with the development of the times and the evolution of aesthetic concepts, contemporary jade carving art has begun to break free from the excessive pursuit of "likeness," turning instead to focus more on the expression of "spiritual resonance" (神韵, shén yùn). This does not mean we have abandoned the pursuit of excellence in carving techniques; rather, we use technique as a vehicle to carry deeper cultural connotations and artistic emotions.

For example, I once participated in the creation of a jade carving piece titled "Landscape of Zen." This work did not depict specific mountains or rivers but instead created an ethereal, tranquil artistic conception through flowing lines, ingenious negative space, and layered relief carving. When viewers appreciate this work, they are no longer simply identifying the objects it represents but can feel a transcendent Zen essence, thus evoking inner resonance. This elevation from "likeness" to "spiritual resonance" is a major highlight of contemporary jade carving art.

II. Innovation in Materials and Craftsmanship: Breaking Through Tradition, Expanding Boundaries

The charm of jade carving art is inseparable from the inherent warmth and luster of jade itself. However, in the past, our use of jade materials was relatively singular, primarily focusing on precious jades such as Hetian jade and jadeite. Today, with the increasing scarcity of jade resources and the diversification of aesthetic concepts, more and more jade carving artists are experimenting with different types of jade, even including some "miscellaneous stones" that were previously overlooked.

For instance, a young colleague of mine boldly combined Xinjiang Gobi jade with Qinghai Kunlun jade for carving. The ruggedness of Gobi jade contrasted sharply with the delicacy of Kunlun jade. Through clever design and exquisite craftsmanship, he created a series of abstract sculptures full of modern sensibility. These works not only demonstrate the diversity of jade materials but also inject new vitality into jade carving art.

In addition to material innovation, innovation in craftsmanship is equally important. Traditional jade carving techniques, such as round carving, relief carving, and openwork carving, remain the foundation of jade carving art. However, building upon this, some artists are beginning to combine modern technology with traditional craftsmanship. For example, using 3D printing technology to assist in design, or applying laser carving technology for fine processing. The application of these new technologies not only improves the efficiency and precision of jade carving but also brings more possibilities to jade carving art.

III. The Transformation of Market and Collection: From "Luxury Goods" to the Return of "Artworks"

For a long time, jade carving works were regarded as luxury goods, their value often linked to the rarity of the jade and market prices. However, with the improvement of people's artistic taste and the change in cultural consumption concepts, contemporary jade carving works have gradually shed the label of "luxury goods" and returned to their essence as "artworks."

This means that the value of a jade carving work is no longer solely determined by the expense of its material; more importantly, it lies in the artistic ideas, cultural connotations, and aesthetic value it embodies. Collectors, when choosing jade carving works, also pay more attention to their artistry and originality.

I once met a young collector who had acquired a jade carving piece created by a young artist. The jade material of this piece was not top-tier, but its unique form, profound meaning, and exquisite craftsmanship deeply moved him. He believed that this work was not just an ornament but an artwork capable of provoking thought and touching the soul. This shift in collecting philosophy undoubtedly provides broader scope for the development of contemporary jade carving art.

IV. The Balance of Inheritance and Innovation: Upholding Tradition, Embracing Nature

The future of jade carving art is inseparable from the inheritance of tradition and the exploration of innovation. We cannot blindly adhere to old ways, nor can we blindly chase trends. How to find a balance between inheritance and innovation is a question every jade carving artist must consider.

I have always believed that "upholding tradition while embracing innovation, and following the laws of nature" (守正出新，道法自然) represents the highest realm of jade carving art. "Upholding tradition" means we must adhere to the essence of jade carving art, including its unique aesthetic concepts, carving techniques, and cultural connotations. "Embracing innovation" means, on the basis of upholding tradition, bravely breaking through and daring to innovate, integrating modern aesthetics and the spirit of the times into jade carving works. "Following the laws of nature" means we must respect the natural attributes of jade, conforming to its texture, color, and form, allowing jade and art to perfectly merge.

Contemporary jade carving art is in an era full of opportunities and challenges. It is no longer a simple craft but an artwork carrying culture, thought, and emotion. As practitioners in the jade industry, we should:

• Deeply study traditional culture: Jade carving art is rooted in traditional Chinese culture; only by deeply understanding traditional culture can we create works with depth and rich connotations.

• Courageously explore innovation: Not confined by tradition, dare to try new materials, techniques, and forms of expression to expand the boundaries of jade carving art.

• Focus on artistic cultivation: Enhance one's aesthetic ability and artistic taste, elevating jade carving creation to a higher artistic level.

• Pay attention to market demand: Understand contemporary aesthetic preferences and consumption habits to create works that are more popular in the market.

• Cultivate young talents: Provide a platform for learning and development for the younger generation of jade carving artists, ensuring the continuous inheritance of jade carving art.
