Having toiled in the jade industry for over thirty years, from an initial apprentice to now the head of a jade carving studio, I have personally witnessed the transformation and development of Chinese jade carving art. In my memory, early jade carvings predominantly featured traditional themes such as Guanyin, Maitreya, dragons and phoenixes, and flora and fauna. The emphasis was on "capturing both form and spirit" and "profound artistic conception." At that time, a fine piece of jade material, coupled with exquisite craftsmanship, could create a masterpiece destined to be passed down through generations. However, with the advancement of time, especially the advent of the information age, people's aesthetic concepts have undergone significant changes.

Today, we face a diversified aesthetic context. Younger consumers, while still appreciating the warmth and spiritual essence of jade, are increasingly focused on personalized expression and design in their pieces. While traditional "large-scale" and "heavy" pieces certainly hold their collection value, it is the lightweight luxury, fashionable, and modern smaller jade ornaments that are more favored by the market. This demands that we, as jade carvers, must boldly innovate while inheriting traditional techniques, integrating modern design concepts into our jade carving creations.

Take, for example, the "Geometric Series" that my studio has created in recent years. We have attempted to combine the linear sense of modern architecture and the abstract beauty of geometric shapes with the warmth of jade, resulting in a series of minimalist yet elegant works. For instance, a Hetian jade pendant named "Rhythm" features asymmetrical geometric facets. Through the refraction of light at different angles, it showcases the unique texture and luster of the jade, preserving its natural beauty while imbuing the piece with the tension of modern art. This endeavor has not only broadened the artistic expression of jade carving but also attracted more young consumers to appreciate jade carving art.

II. Technology Empowerment: "New Wings" for Traditional Craftsmanship

Speaking of innovation, one cannot overlook the application of technology in the field of jade carving. In the past, jade carving relied entirely on manual labor. From material cutting, design, carving, to polishing, every step embodied the painstaking effort and sweat of the jade carver. However, some highly difficult and precise carvings often consumed a great deal of time and effort, and were even challenging to achieve.

In recent years, with the maturity of technologies such as 3D modeling and CNC carving, some jade carving studios have begun to experiment with integrating technology into their creations. I am well aware that, in the eyes of some colleagues with more traditional views, this might be seen as a "desecration" of traditional craftsmanship. However, I believe that technology is not meant to replace manual work, but rather to give "new wings" to manual techniques.

For example, when carving complex human faces or animal fur, we can first use 3D modeling software for precise design, then utilize a CNC carving machine for initial shaping, and finally have experienced jade carvers refine and detail the work. This not only ensures the precision of the pieces but also significantly improves efficiency, allowing jade carvers to focus more on artistic expression and creative conception. Of course, this requires jade carvers to possess interdisciplinary knowledge and skills, understanding not only jade carving but also design software and mechanical operation. This is precisely the type of new talent our industry needs to cultivate.

III. Deepening Cultural Connotation: The Soul of Jade Carving

Regardless of how techniques innovate or technology develops, the soul of jade carving always lies in its profound cultural connotation. In Chinese culture, jade is not merely a precious mineral; it symbolizes the virtues of a gentleman, embodying the traditional virtues of "benevolence, righteousness, wisdom, courage, and integrity."

Therefore, in our creations, we must not only stay at the technical level but also delve deep into the cultural value embedded in jade. Every piece of jade has its unique texture, color, and story. We should feel them with our hearts and present these stories through the art of carving.

I was once invited to customize a jade carving for an overseas collector. He hoped the piece would embody the essence of traditional Chinese culture while possessing an international aesthetic. After much deliberation, I decided to take the philosophical concept of "unity of man and nature" as the theme. I selected a piece of Hetian jade with a warm texture and natural dark inclusions, skillfully utilizing the distribution of the dark areas to carve mountains, rivers, clouds, and mists, then subtly adorning it with abstract human figures, symbolizing the harmonious coexistence of humanity and nature. Upon completion, the collector was extremely satisfied, believing that it not only showcased the exquisite craftsmanship of Chinese jade carving but also conveyed profound Eastern wisdom.

IV. Market and Education: The Future Path of the Jade Carving Industry

Looking ahead, for the jade carving industry to continue its development, it requires a dual impetus from both the market and education.

In terms of the market, we need to place greater emphasis on brand building and marketing. Traditional jade carving sales models primarily rely on physical stores and exhibitions, with a relatively limited audience. Today, with the rise of e-commerce and live streaming, we can leverage online platforms to introduce jade carving works to a broader market. At the same time, we must strengthen cross-industry collaborations with fashion, design, and other sectors, allowing jade art to integrate into more aspects of daily life and attract more young consumers.

In terms of education, we urgently need to establish a comprehensive talent training system for jade carving. This includes:

  • Apprenticeship system emphasizing both inheritance and innovation: While preserving the essence of the traditional master-apprentice system, modern educational concepts should be introduced, allowing apprentices to learn not only carving techniques but also design, aesthetics, and marketing knowledge.


  • Professional development in higher education institutions: Encourage art colleges to establish jade carving majors, cultivating versatile talents with artistic theory, design capabilities, and practical experience.


  • International exchange and cooperation: Actively participate in international art exchange activities, learning from advanced artistic concepts and technologies abroad, while also promoting Chinese jade carving art to the world.

We must not be complacent, nor should we blindly follow trends.
