For example, a few years ago at a Christie's auction, a jadeite necklace that once belonged to a legendary socialite, despite its "texture, clarity, and color" not being absolutely top-tier, sold for significantly more than its estimated price due to the unique story and historical value it carried. This tells us that when investing in jadeite, in addition to focusing on the intrinsic quality of the material, we must also explore its potential cultural added value. A piece of jadeite with a story and a clear provenance often has greater appreciation potential.

Secondly, "design sense" and "craftsmanship aesthetics" are becoming prominent. With the integration of global aesthetic concepts, traditional jadeite inlay craftsmanship, while classic, can sometimes appear somewhat conservative. International auction houses are increasingly favoring works that perfectly combine traditional jadeite with modern design concepts. For example, jadeite with unique fluorescence, jadeite with natural intricate carvings, or "Fu Lu Shou" (Fortune, Prosperity, Longevity) three-color jadeite with extremely uniform and rare color distribution, are having their scarcity re-evaluated. I once saw a small jadeite pendant, though small in size, with a profound "floating flower" artistic conception, which sparked fierce bidding at auction due to its unique "landscape painting" aesthetic. This indicates that the market's pursuit of "uniqueness" has surpassed the obsession with "flawless perfection."

Of course, we must also clearly recognize that the international auction market is not without risks. High transaction prices are often backed by buyers' deep understanding of the item's value and accurate judgment of market trends. For novice collectors, blindly following trends or investing solely out of enthusiasm can lead to risks.

So, how should we invest and collect in such a complex market?

My recommendations are:

  • Deep Learning and Enhanced Appreciation Skills: This is the most fundamental point. Understanding the basic knowledge of jadeite's texture, clarity, color, craftsmanship, and flaws is the foundation for judging its value. See more physical objects, communicate more with experts, and continuously improve your discernment.


  • Follow Trends and Grasp Market Pulse: Pay close attention to international auction house previews and sales reports to understand which types of jadeite are popular and which design styles are more favored. At the same time, also monitor global economic conditions and the overall direction of the art market.


  • Act Within Your Means and Invest Rationally: Jadeite investment is a long-term endeavor; avoid blindly chasing high prices. Choose items that suit your financial capacity and collecting preferences.


  • Emphasize Provenance and Ensure Authenticity: When purchasing jadeite, be sure to choose reputable auction houses or dealers, and request authoritative appraisal certificates to ensure the authenticity and legality of the item. Items with clear origins and well-documented provenance often have higher value.


  • Cultivate Aesthetics and Seek Uniqueness: Don't limit yourself to traditional aesthetic standards; try to appreciate jadeite with unique design sense, cultural connotations, or rare characteristics. Sometimes, a jadeite that is not "perfect" but full of individuality can have greater collection value and appreciation potential.

From simply pursuing the ultimate in material quality, it is now placing greater emphasis on cultural connotations, design aesthetics, and personalized scarcity.
