I am Wang Ruifang, having dedicated over thirty years to the jade industry, with a particular focus on and deep insight into the international auction market. Today, I would like to share my latest observations and thoughts on the current international jade auction market, especially concerning the jadeite and Hetian jade segments.

In recent years, despite global economic fluctuations and geopolitical complexities, the strong performance of jade, particularly high-quality jadeite and Hetian jade, in the international auction market has remained undeterred. This phenomenon is driven by both the persistent pursuit of rare resources by traditional collector groups and the dual demand for cultural symbols and investment value from emerging affluent classes.

I. Jadeite: From "Oriental Treasure" to "Global Hard Currency"

In the past, jadeite collection and trade were primarily concentrated in Asian regions, especially mainland China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Southeast Asian Chinese communities. However, in international auctions over the past five years, we have clearly observed an expanding audience for jadeite. European and American collectors, and even new wealth from the Middle East, are beginning to show strong interest in top-grade jadeite.

I have personally witnessed Christie's and Sotheby's spring and autumn auctions in Hong Kong, where "Imperial Green" jadeite bead necklaces, bangles, and cabochons repeatedly set new transaction records. For instance, at Sotheby's Hong Kong autumn auction in 2017, a piece named "Magnificent Jadeite Bead Necklace" sold for over HKD 120 million. Its rich color, fine texture, and excellent translucency (种水) captivated collectors worldwide. Last year, a necklace composed of 23 old-mine "glass-like" Imperial Green jadeite beads fetched nearly HKD 200 million at Christie's Hong Kong, astonishing the industry.

Behind this "globalization" trend, I believe there are several key factors:

  • Cultural Export: With the rise of China's economic power, the influence of Chinese culture is also growing. Jadeite, as a unique carrier of Chinese culture, with its embedded meanings of auspiciousness, wealth, and peace, is gradually being understood and accepted by the international community.


  • Scarcity and Value Preservation/Appreciation: The increasing depletion of high-quality jadeite rough from Myanmar further highlights the scarcity of top-grade jadeite. In the context of inflation and increasing global economic uncertainty, jadeite, as a tangible asset with high value preservation and appreciation capabilities, is being re-evaluated for its investment potential.


  • Diversified Aesthetics: International collectors' appreciation for jadeite is no longer limited to the traditional "old-fashioned" impression. Novel designs, exquisitely set jadeite jewelry, especially pieces that integrate Western jewelry design concepts, are more likely to gain favor in the international market.


II. Hetian Jade: From "Literati's Elegant Plaything" to "Artistic Masterpiece"

Compared to the dazzling brilliance of jadeite, the warm and subtle elegance of Hetian jade embodies a more profound Oriental charm. In the past, the Hetian jade auction market was mainly concentrated in mainland China, focusing on works by master carvers and raw pebble jade (籽料). However, in recent years, I have observed that Hetian jade is also beginning to emerge in the international auction market, particularly exquisite pieces that combine artistic merit with scarcity.

In 2019, a Qing Dynasty Qianlong period white jade carving of "Immortal Mountain and Pavilion" sold for over RMB 50 million at Beijing Poly Auction, proving the value of top-grade Hetian jade. More notably, some overseas auction houses have also started to offer special sales or curated selections of Hetian jade. Although the scale is not yet comparable to jadeite, their transaction prices and attention are steadily increasing.

I believe the internationalization of Hetian jade has the following characteristics:

  • Material is King: International collectors' understanding of Hetian jade is primarily based on its unique material beauty. The warm, delicate, and flawless quality of "mutton-fat" white jade (羊脂白玉) is its core appeal.


  • Craftsmanship Enhancement: Exquisite jade carving techniques, especially those that showcase the essence of traditional Chinese culture, such as landscapes, figures, and flora and fauna, are key to enhancing the artistic value of Hetian jade. International collectors show strong interest in the works of master carvers, such as the legacy and innovation of masters like Lu Zigang and Guo Shilin.


  • Cultural Story: Hetian jade possesses a profound historical and cultural heritage, closely intertwined with the development of Chinese civilization. Telling the stories behind Hetian jade and exploring its cultural connotations is an effective way to attract international collectors.


III. Future Trends and Investment Advice

Looking ahead, I believe the international jade auction market will exhibit the following trends:

  • Digitalization and Intelligence: Online auctions, VR/AR exhibitions, and other technologies will become more prevalent, offering global collectors more convenient and immersive experiences. Blockchain technology is also expected to be applied to jade traceability and anti-counterfeiting, enhancing market transparency.


  • Youthfulness and Personalization: The aesthetic tastes and demands of the younger generation of collectors are more diverse; they place greater emphasis on design, cultural connotation, and personal expression.


  • Branding and Internationalization: Jade brands will focus more on expanding into international markets, enhancing brand influence through collaborations with international designers and participation in international exhibitions.


For all collectors and investors, I offer some advice:

  • Deepen Learning, Enhance Appreciation Skills: Jade collecting is a discipline that requires continuous learning and accumulation of experience. Understanding knowledge about jade's translucency (种水), color, craftsmanship, history, and culture is fundamental to making informed choices.


  • Focus on Scarcity and Uniqueness: In the market, what truly holds collection value are those rare, unique, and artistically valuable exquisite pieces.


  • Invest Prudently, Within Your Means: Jade investment has cyclical characteristics, and price fluctuations are influenced by various factors. Avoid blindly following trends; invest according to your financial capacity and risk tolerance.


  • Seek Professional Assistance: Choose reputable auction houses, dealers, and appraisal institutions to obtain professional advice and guarantees.


Jade, carrying thousands of years of Oriental culture and wisdom, with its warm and subtle quality, is like the virtue of a gentleman. On the stage of the international auction market, it is radiating an even more brilliant glow with its unique charm. I believe that with the deepening of global cultural exchange, the value of jade will gain wider recognition, and its collection and investment prospects will become even broader.
