Fellow jade enthusiasts, I am Li Yuhua. Having toiled in the Hetian jade industry for nearly thirty years, from my initial naive entry to now possessing a modest understanding, I have witnessed the dramatic shifts in the Hetian jade market and personally experienced countless joys and challenges of appraising and seeking treasures. Today, I wish to share some of my latest insights into Hetian jade collecting, hoping to help everyone dispel the fog and glimpse the future.

I. Market Status: A Dazzling Array, Requiring Careful Distinction Between Authenticity and Quality

The current Hetian jade market can be described as "a dazzling array of flowers, tempting and confusing." On the one hand, high-quality rough jade (籽料, zǐliào) resources are increasingly scarce, driving prices sky-high, making fine pieces hard to come by. On the other hand, a broad range of Hetian jade, including Russian, Qinghai, and Korean materials, floods the market, often with inferior goods being passed off as superior, and even fakes being sold as genuine, a phenomenon that is all too common. This presents a significant challenge for collectors.

I once encountered such a case: a novice collector, having spent a high price on a piece of "mutton-fat jade," excitedly brought it to me for inspection. After careful observation, I found significant differences in its luster, structure, and density compared to genuine Hetian zǐliào, let alone meeting the standards of mutton-fat jade. Ultimately, professional testing confirmed that the jade was high-quality Russian material. While Russian jade also has its value, its price differs vastly from that of mutton-fat jade. This case warns us that in an age of information overload, collectors must be even more discerning, learn more, practice more, and never blindly follow trends.

II. Collection Trends: Emphasizing Quality Over Quantity, Balancing Cultural Connotation with Artistic Value

I believe that future Hetian jade collecting will exhibit a trend of "emphasizing quality over quantity." In the past, some collectors pursued quantity, acquiring any piece of Hetian jade, leading to a mixed bag of collections. However, with the maturation of collecting philosophies, people are now paying more attention to the jade's quality, rarity, and artistry.

  • Scarcity is Hard Currency: Genuine Hetian zǐliào, especially exquisite pieces possessing the five characteristics of "whiteness, luster, fineness, stickiness, and oiliness," have an irreplaceable collection value determined by their scarcity. In the future, the price of such zǐliào will continue to rise steadily. I once collected a piece of "ju pi zǐliào" (聚皮籽料, aggregated skin rough jade) weighing about 50 grams, with a mature skin color and delicate, warm, and moist jade quality. I acquired it at a relatively reasonable price at the time. Today, similar quality zǐliào has seen its price multiply several times over. This is not due to my unique foresight but a natural reflection of scarcity value.

  • Return of Cultural Connotation: Hetian jade is not merely a stone; it is also a carrier of the Chinese nation's millennia-old culture. In the future, jade artifacts that embody profound cultural connotations, possess historical stories, or unique auspicious meanings will be more sought after. For example, exquisitely carved ancient pieces or works by renowned masters, with their auspicious symbolism, will have artistic and cultural values far exceeding the value of the jade itself.

  • Elevation of Artistic Value: With the continuous development of jade carving techniques, the works of contemporary jade carving masters are increasingly attracting market attention. A good jade carving is a perfect fusion of jade and art. Collecting such works allows one to appreciate both the beauty of the jade and the charm of the art.

III. Identification Essentials: Combining Discernment, Experience, and Scientific Testing

In the identification of Hetian jade, I consistently emphasize "combining discernment, experience, and scientific testing."

  • Discernment as the Foundation: Observe many physical objects, handle them frequently, and cultivate sensitivity to the characteristics of jade, such as texture, luster, skin color, and pores. I often say that appreciating jade is like tasting tea; it requires careful savoring to truly grasp its essence.

  • Experience as Accumulation: Seek advice from experts, communicate frequently with fellow collectors, and continuously summarize experience from practice. When I was young, to identify the origin of a piece of jade, I did not hesitate to travel back and forth between Xinjiang and the mainland multiple times, just to personally touch jade from different origins and feel their subtle differences.

  • Scientific Testing as Assurance: For questionable jade, do not hesitate to send it for testing. Professional testing institutions can provide accurate data on mineral composition, density, refractive index, etc., providing a scientific basis for our judgment. I have personally witnessed a stone, mistakenly identified as Hetian jade by the market, being confirmed as quartzite after testing, preventing significant losses for the collector.

IV. Collection Advice: Rational Investment, Enjoy the Process

Finally, I would like to offer a few pieces of advice for collecting:

  • Learning is the First Step: Before entering the market, be sure to thoroughly learn the basic knowledge of Hetian jade, including its origin, classification, and identification methods. Knowledge is the best self-defense tool.

  • Rational Investment, Within Your Means: Hetian jade collecting is a long-term investment; do not expect to get rich overnight. Choose collectibles that suit your financial capabilities.

  • Seek Professional Guidance: If conditions permit, seek guidance from experienced collectors or professional institutions to avoid detours.

  • Enjoy the Collection Process: Collecting Hetian jade is not just for appreciation; more importantly, it is about enjoying the process of being accompanied by beautiful jade and experiencing the profoundness of Chinese jade culture. Every piece of jade has its unique life and story; feel it with your heart, and you will discover endless joy.

Thirty years have passed in a flash. The path of Hetian jade collecting is full of challenges and surprises. May we all, on this path, dispel the fog, glimpse the future, and find our own "jade destiny." Thank you all.
