Hello everyone, I am Zhang Mingyuan. Having been immersed in the jade industry for over thirty years, I have witnessed the dramatic shifts in the jade market and deeply understand its mysteries and challenges. Today, I want to share some of my latest insights into jade appraisal and investment, hoping to provide valuable references for fellow jade enthusiasts and investors.

I. The Integration of Traditional Appraisal and Technological Empowerment: The "Dual-Core Drive" of New-Era Appraisal

In the past, jade appraisal relied heavily on the keen eyes, tactile sense, and auditory discernment of experienced experts. While these traditional methods are classic and indispensable, with the advancement of technology, we are now entering an era where "traditional appraisal and technological empowerment" operate in parallel.

I've recently observed a significant trend: an increasing number of professional appraisal institutions are incorporating high-tech equipment, such as Raman spectrometers, infrared spectrometers, and X-ray fluorescence spectrometers, for more precise analysis of jade's composition, structure, and treatment. These devices can effectively identify B-grade, C-grade, and even some highly sophisticated B+C-grade fakes, greatly enhancing the accuracy and efficiency of appraisal.

For instance, not long ago, I encountered a "Lao Kang glass-type" bangle of exquisite quality. To the naked eye, it appeared almost flawless. However, Raman spectroscopy revealed trace amounts of epoxy resin filling internally, confirming it as a B-grade item. In the past, even highly experienced experts might have been deceived by such sophisticated counterfeiting techniques.

My view is that future jade appraisal will no longer be a contest of single skills, but rather a perfect combination of traditional experience and modern technology. For investors, choosing appraisal institutions with a "dual-core drive" capability is crucial for mitigating risks and ensuring investment security.

II. Shifting Market Trends: From "Type-Only Theory" to "Comprehensive Value Theory"

For a long time, the jade market has adhered to the philosophy of "type is king," meaning that high-quality jade types like glass-type and ice-type have been highly sought after, commanding high prices. However, in recent years, I have noticed a subtle but profound shift in market trends.

The era of "type-only theory" is gradually being replaced by "comprehensive value theory." Consumers and investors are beginning to pay more attention to the overall aesthetic appeal, cultural connotations, creative design, and rarity of jade.

For example, some distinctive "Hua Qing type" and "You Qing type" jades, if they possess unique color distribution, exquisite carving, and novel themes, their market value might even surpass some ice-type jades that are of average quality but lack distinctiveness. Similarly, some jades with unique historical backgrounds or carved by renowned masters, even if their type isn't top-tier, their artistic and collection value can significantly increase their worth.

I recently participated in an auction where a "Mo Cui" (black jade) ornament, designed and carved by a contemporary jade master, sold for a price far exceeding expectations, despite its type not being as high as a glass-type bangle auctioned at the same event. This fully illustrates the market's recognition of the comprehensive value of jade.

Therefore, my advice is that investors, when selecting jade, should no longer blindly pursue high-quality types, but rather consider its type, translucency, color, craftsmanship, form, charm, and cultural added value more comprehensively. Only jade with comprehensive aesthetic appeal and uniqueness can demonstrate stronger potential for value preservation and appreciation in the future market.

III. Diversification of Investment Strategies: From Physical Collection to Cultural Investment

In the past, jade investment primarily focused on physical collection, i.e., purchasing high-quality raw jade or finished products and waiting for their natural appreciation. However, with market development and changing consumer demands, jade investment strategies have also become more diversified.

I have observed that, in addition to traditional physical collection, the following investment methods are gradually emerging:

  • Art Investment: Investing in jade artworks created by renowned jade carving masters. These works not only possess the inherent value of jade but also embody the artist's thoughts and skills, making their artistic and rarity values higher for collection and investment.

  • Cultural IP Investment: Investing in cultural and creative products or brands related to jade. For example, some cultural and creative brands that combine jade culture with modern design, by storytelling and design, infuse new vitality into jade, attracting a younger generation of consumers.

  • Industry Chain Investment: Investing in various segments of the jade industry chain, such as mining, processing and design, and brand marketing. This investment method carries higher risks but also offers greater potential returns, requiring investors to possess deep industry knowledge and resources.

My view is that future jade investment will no longer be limited to single physical transactions but will extend into broader cultural and artistic realms. For investors aspiring to delve deep into the jade sector, broadening their horizons and trying diversified investment strategies will help them seize market opportunities and achieve wealth appreciation.

Summary and Recommendations:

The jade market is at a critical juncture of transformation and upgrading. For investors, this presents both challenges and opportunities.

  • Enhance Appraisal Skills: Actively learn and master both traditional experience and technological methods. Choosing professional and authoritative appraisal institutions is the first step to ensuring investment security.

  • Shift Investment Philosophy: Move from "type-only theory" to "comprehensive value theory," focusing on the overall aesthetic appeal, cultural connotations, and rarity of jade.

  • Broaden Investment Horizons: In addition to physical collection, consider diversified strategies such as art investment and cultural IP investment.

  • Maintain a Learning Mindset: The jade market is constantly changing; only by continuously learning new knowledge and understanding new trends can one remain invincible in fierce market competition.

Finally, I want to say that jade is not only a precious mineral but also carries profound Chinese culture. Investing in jade is not just about accumulating wealth; it is also about inheriting and loving traditional culture. I hope my insights can inspire everyone, and I wish all fellow jade enthusiasts can find their beloved treasures in the world of jade and achieve extraordinary wealth. Thank you all!
